My firewalls had an old unused OpenVPN client connection on it that was unstable and every time it reconnected, it got a new IP address causing pfsense to restart all packages, and since it took down SNMP, we wouldn't get alerted about the interface going down either...
So this issue is solved now

This doesn't look like the same issue as before, which was a FD leak. This looks like a straight up memory leak. Both bsnmpd's crashed in the middle of a tenable scan. Looking at another pair of our firewalls bsnmpd is taking up a boatload of memory:
10545 root          1  20    0  5446M  3015M select   4  14:12   0.03% bsnmpd
and
34784 root          1  20    0  5382M  2626M select   6  16:50   0.00% bsnmpd
So 3GB and 2.6GB ram resident. These two firewalls crashed maybe 15 days ago (when I last posted). We're also seeing the firewalls run out of swap space before the kill event, although a day or few before:
2&gt;1 2025-04-18T14:01:06.988988-04:00 fw kernel - - - swap_pager: out of swap space
&lt;2&gt;1 2025-04-18T14:01:06.989098-04:00  - - - swp_pager_getswapspace(2): failed
&lt;2&gt;1 2025-04-19T04:00:28.371252-04:00 kernel - - - swp_pager_getswapspace(30): failed
Before the final kill
&lt;3&gt;1 2025-04-20T04:55:09.682953-04:00 kernel - - - pid 65139 (bsnmpd), jid 0, uid 0, was killed: failed to reclaim memory
While not fully conclusive, my guess is bsnmpd leaks memory during a tenable scan. I suppose we could prove this by kicking off a scan and looking at memory before/after. However I'm going to capture the status.php and open a support case.

<p dir="auto">The solution was to change cfgmaker arguments:</p>
<pre><code>/usr/bin/cfgmaker --zero-speed=10000000 -o outfile.cfg community@object
</code></pre>
<p dir="auto">Additionally, --ifdesc=descr changed the Title to start with <em>device</em> or <em>device.vlan</em> where appropriate.</p>
<p dir="auto">Here is the site that gave me the hint:<br />
<a href="https://aacable.wordpress.com/2014/07/07/mrtg-monitoring-with-esxi-hosted-guest-return-interface-is-commented-has-no-ifspeed-property/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc">https://aacable.wordpress.com/2014/07/07/mrtg-monitoring-with-esxi-hosted-guest-return-interface-is-commented-has-no-ifspeed-property/</a></p>

<p dir="auto">However, cfgmaker does not have an argument for enabling monitoring of loopback devices, though there is a more complicated method to work around that using something such as '--if-filter=($default_iftype &amp;&amp; $if_admin)' with type 24, softwareLoopback as documented at the website above or something like below:</p>
<pre><code>"--if-filter=($default || $if_type==24)"
</code></pre>
<p dir="auto">The positional order is important, all flags need to precede community@router. --if-filter carries a caveat:</p>
<pre><code>--if-filter=f Test every interface against filter f to decide wether
                   or not to include that interface into the collection.
                   Currently f is being evaluated as a Perl expression
                   and it's truth value is used to reject or accept the
                   interface.
                   (Experimental, under development, might change)
</code></pre>
<p dir="auto">The resulting command line argument contains double quotes:</p>
<pre><code>/usr/bin/cfgmaker --ifdesc=descr --zero-speed=10000000 "--if-filter=($default
|| $if_type==24)" -o outfile.cfg community@router
</code></pre>
<p dir="auto">If you run into an issue with the shell interpreting the contents, switch to the double quotes to single quotes.</p>
<p dir="auto">Now lo0 is monitored by MRTG using bsnmpd. To monitor lo0 and everything ethernet:</p>
<pre><code>/usr/bin/cfgmaker --ifdesc=descr --zero-speed=10000000 "--if-filter=($default
|| $if_type==24 || $if_type==6)" -o outfile.cfg community@router

Switching from ISC DHCP to Kea DHCP immediately alerted on Zabbix that DHCP was down on the pfSense server.</p>
<p dir="auto">Initially, I thought it was a blip due to a service restarting, and the SNMP check happening at the same time, but the alert didn't go away.<br />
I knew it was a false alert because DHCP was clearly working, so I looked into the root cause of the false alert.</p>
<p dir="auto">The actual issue was that the ISC process name 'dhcpd' is replaced by 'kea-dhcp4' and 'kea-dhcp6', so the old process name isn't running anymore, and that is what Zabbix was looking for.</p>
<p dir="auto">below is the basic snmpwalk to check the relevant OID:</p>
<p dir="auto">% snmpwalk [pfsense-server] .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.4.2.1.2 | grep dhcp<br />
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunName.13707 = STRING: "kea-dhcp4"<br />
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunName.13916 = STRING: "kea-dhcp6"<br />
HOST-RESOURCES-MIB::hrSWRunName.56040 = STRING: "dhcpleases"</p>
<p dir="auto">The correction needed is on the Zabbix side to look for the new processes (clone the DHCP monitoring template, change the SNMP OID check to look for the new process names, and disable the previous one.)</p>
<p dir="auto">I am posting it on the pfSense SNMP forum as as FYI in case anyone else is monitoring pfSense DHCP service via SNMP since it would affect any SNMP monitor searching by process name when switching between ISC and Kea DHCP.</p>

It has nothing to do with V2 or V3.
The problem is, that with pfsense+ 23.05.1 all SNMP requests get delayed by the factor 3-4.
With pfsense+ 22.05, it takes between 2-3 seconds to get the status of all Interfaces from a Switch:
[image: 1692946837574-2205.jpg]
With pfsense+ 23.05.1, its takes between 9-11 seconds to get the status of all Interfaces from a Switch:
[image: 1692946839291-23051.jpg]
They say, that there is probably some kind of "internal QOS" delaying SNMP requests in the new firmware, or SNMP has a very low priority in some system services.
Is that the fact? Or why does the SNMP responses get such a high delay?
The base configuration of our NAC Software is 32 OIDs per request, with 30 values per response packet in the answer, with a timeout of 2 Seconds per answer. This worked without problems under 22.05.
We could make a workaround for our NAC Software. We had to set it to 1 OID, with 8 values per packet and a timeout of 10 seconds. SNMP is working with this config again, but as I said above, with a delay factor of 3-4 compared to pfsense 22.05.

The first is multi line, and the second is single line. Which to use depends upon how you want to parse on the other end. To me, multi line is simpler, but some people strongly prefer single line. To each their own.
Assuming that you name the extend "dpinger", you will find the OID at
NET-SNMP-EXTEND-MIB::nsExtendOutputFull."dpinger"
(.1.3.6.1.4.1.8072.1.3.2.3.1.2.7.100.112.105.110.103.101.114)
Enjoy.
