[SOLVED] Internet Service to Downstream Router Unreliable
-
I'm not a network guy, just took one class while getting my CS degree so I'm not sure I'm searching for the right terms. If this question has been answered before, please let me know where my search is failing.
I set up my pfSense box last night (HP ProLiant dl360 gen 6) and was mostly successful. I had an AT&T gateway, then a switch and a dd-wrt router both connected to the gateway. My plan was to have the pfsense box be the only connection to the lan ports of the gateway, but I never got that to work quite right. The network seemed to be up, but no Internet access was provided without the switch also connected to the gateway. I was just going to leave the network in that state until I could spend more time on it, but this morning, the Internet access was very unreliable from the dd-wrt router.
What might cause this? The pfsense box was set up with mostly the default settings. I really only changed the lan ip address and the dhcp range, but the wan ip address was still dhcp. The dd-wrt router was set to router mode as opposed to gateway and was getting its ip from pfsense. Is it maybe related to the fact that I was still having to connect the switch to the at&t gateway?
Thanks in advance.

So the WAN address is in a private IP range. Then you have to remove the check from "Block private networks and loopback addresses" in the WAN interface setting. Have you done?

Ahh. I believe that box was checked. I'll test it out tonight. Thanks ;D

Okay, I finally got this to work. When I got back on, for some reason the wan ip was not good and I didn't have time to fix it. So now, that I gave it a static ip and unchecked the box, I was able to pull the second cable from the gateway and still have internet service. I'll update when I've got a couple of days of reliable service and call this solved.
Thanks!
