WAN interface goes down and restart only after a complete reboot
-
Hello everyone,
I've a mini-pc with pfSense (last update) for a week now, it is connected via ethernet (ppoe) to a modem in bridge mode then to the internet and on the other ethernet to the main network switch.
Everything worked well for 4 days, then suddenly the WAN went down (red arrow pointing down in dashboard). I made several test with enable/disable and so on with no success.
The only working option was to fully reboot the mini-pc, everything came back to normal for ONE day, then WAN went down again. Another reboot and again working….
I've checked the modem and the internet line never went down in the same moment as the WAN. Actually it happen a couple of internet re-connections perfectly handled by pfSense.
Could this be an hardware issue on the WAN port? Which logs can I check?
The mini-PC (chinese intel 3050 barebone) is brand new, I've mounted 4gb ram and 30gb ssd, it comes with 2 gigabit ethernet ports and one intel wifi which I disabled because does not support access point mode.
Thanks for helping!

Is this a real router in bridge mode or a pure modem? If you own a router and it is not in the bridge mode
and it is doing SPI/NAT by its own, it could good be that the DHCP lease time from that network expires!Everything worked well for 4 days, then suddenly the WAN went down (red arrow pointing down in dashboard). I made several test with enable/disable and so on with no success.
Perhaps a auto negotiation mismatch? Cable broken?

Is the ISP having a brake every 24 hours and the pfSense would be not able to reconnect proper?

Can you give us the vendor model and full name of the "modem"?

Chinese or made in the USA is not really important if there will be a problem with the hardware.

Hello Frank,
here my "modem" D-Link DSL-320B, it was working pretty well as normal modem/router (out of the box) and, I'm quite confident, it is working well in bridge mode for this reasons:
-
I've also configured the access from the internal network to the modem configuration web pages, following one of the how-to in pfSense. When the WAN is down, I cannot access the modem configuration page. BUT if, in that moment, I directly connect the modem to a PC, I see that the modem is working and the internet is up. The issue is somewhere in the pfSense mini-pc
-
this sentence from my first post is also relevant:
I've checked the modem and the internet line never went down in the same moment as the WAN. Actually it happen a couple of internet re-connections perfectly handled by pfSense.
So pfSense is reacting pretty well to ISP break moments and I see no relation between internet up/down and pfSense WAN port down.
I'm really suspicious about some hardware issue with the ethernet port I've configured as WAN. I would try to switch the ports and reset the configuration as well.
I was wondering if there is any logs that can help understanding "why" the WAN goes down.
Thanks for the feedback.

For information, I've got the reason of my issue: the Realtek driver is not working properly.
Here a discussion about that, which confirms my case:

I'm having almost the same issue but I can't even access the webui.
The computer is still up and running but I have no net or local access -
In my case, reboot always temporarely restore the network functionality.
Does this apply to you as well?
At the moment I've followed some suggestion from the thread on the FreeBSD forum and forced the network card to run at 100Mbit instead of 1Gbit.
So far so good. I'm at 24 hours with no issues.
Knock on wood!
