1u server with 6 or 5 nics?
-
Hi all,
I'm looking for a server with 5 or 6 1000 nic's. Cause i like to use internal filtering too.
Right now i have a desktop tower for this.Someone knows where i can buy such a rack server?

Maby not what you looking for but why just dont run with 2-3 interfaces and use vlans?
you will need a vlan capable switch of course.just in case you missed that functionality ;)

I have this:
nic1 vlan 1: edu
nic2 vlan 2: Resources (servers)
nic3 vlan 3: printers
nic4 : internet
nic5: internet (failover)i want to filter ports between the vlans thats why i need 5 nic's.

Expansion Slots
PCI Express x16 1 x PCI-E x16 (x8 link)
PCI Express x8 1 x PCI-E x8 (x1 link)
PCI Slots 3
Onboard LAN
LAN Chipset 4 x Marvell 8056
Max LAN Speed Quad 10/100/1000Mbps -
There have been threads here on there being a limit of the number of NICs supported by FreeBSD (the underlying OS). However, any decent 1U server is likely to have at least a couple of onboard ports and a couple of expansion slots. That should provide more than enough connectivity (you can get quad port cards - just search the forum before buying).

here's one more to check out ..a 1U by supermicro

you can upgrade the CPU up to a quad core. Just add the Intel Pro quad Gig network card and you should be good to go
I have a 1U server running with 6 NICs on pfsense 1.2.x no probs (gateway router with 12 BGP peers)

Are you sure these servers support BSD/Pfsense?
I'm thinking about these specs:
SERVER CHASSIS (Black Chassis version) Supermicro SC513L-260B 1U Black Chassis w/260W PSU (AC4224) (CS8047)
POWER SUPPLY Supermicro 260W 1U power supply PWS-0055

IPMI Management Card No IPMI Management Card
MEMORY DIMM Total 4GB, 4pcs of Kingston 1GB DDR2 800MHZ ECC KVR800D2E5/1G (RM5119-4pcs)

OPERATING SYSTEM Entry Server - NO O/S (BS1401)Is a INTEL CPU PROCESSOR Intel Quad-Core Xeon X3350 Processor 2.66GHz 1333MHz and 4 gb ram nescecary for running pfsense? i'm using pfsense with multi wan and internal filtering. Our network contains 300 client computers and 15 servers.

We have a 1u installation with 8 NICs that has been rock solid. In fact, they lost their cooling a few weeks back and the server room was well over 100 degrees. Every server was overheated and throwing errors on the front panel, but the pfsense box was still humming along ;D

Are you running a sunmicro too?

Hardware sizing depends on throughput, not users.
Have a look here:

Allright i'm thinking about buying a dell 1950 because or main supplier is Dell.
Anyone has experience with this server type? -
It certainly works with FreeBSD 7, which 1.2.1 and later are based upon. I'm not sure if the onboard RAID is supported under FreeBSD 6.2 (which is what pfSense 1.2 uses).

Thanks, thats great!
