Shuttle DS68U with Intel i211 and 219LM NICS
-
Today I should get a Shuttle DS68 U delivered. It will replace an old Dell laptop (C2D P8400) I have been using at home for some time in a single NIC configuration.
Now that I can finally dedicate a NIC to the WAN interface with the 2nd one handling all 7 VLANs on my LAN, I was wondering which of the two NICS should I use for what if it makes a difference. They are both Intel, i211 and i219LM and I think one is igb while the other is em.

I would use the em interface (i219) for wan and the better igb (i211) for lan.

Take the em for the AN part and the igb(4) for the LAN part.

Thanks, I did as suggested, em for WA and igb for LAN. Everything working well.

Does the wi-fi work with pfSense?

No, I believe this model uses a crappy Realtek wifi card. Even if it was detected and supported, any external AP will always be much better solution.

what is the difference between i219 and i211 ? many thanks

It's my understanding that the i211 is "better" as it supports more features in hardware compared to the i219. Also the i211 uses the igb driver, while the i219 uses the em driver.

It's sometimes good to have access to both NIC types. If you have a fast PPPoE connection for example you are probably better off using an em NIC for that currently.
