any ideas?

Can you try from console / ssh ?:

pkg update -f
pkg upgrade -f

that worked.  its bizzar the update function isn't working for some reasons

If that doesn't help, then try switching to beta, run 'pkg update' and cancel, then switch back to stable release branch and try above commands again.
