Ryzen 3 Restarts under Load
-
My Google-fu seems to have failed me, so please point me in the right direction if this has been covered.
I've recently built a system with a Ryzen 3 1200 and 8 GB of RAM. The installation is running off of a USB 3.0 stick, and I'm utilizing the embedded NIC in the motherboard, along with an Intel dual-port 1 Gbps NIC.
Unfortunately, I'm running into occasional reboots when the server is under a bit of traffic (I'm certainly not throwing enough at this thing to make it even sweat). My logging data isn't very helpful, as it appears to have crashed. I don't believe this is the PSU, since it's rebooting immediately.
I'm currently running 2.3.4-RELEASE-p1. Should I be running 2.4? Does that have the support I need for this processor? I suspect that might be the case.
Thanks.

Hi Mate.
There is currently a known issue with C3 Stepping (I think) With Certain Models of Ryzen.
What could be happening, is the PSU isn't providing enough power.
But im leaning towards it being the C3 Stepping on Ryzen, apparently it affected CPU Built in a certain batch? and the use of Linux?
Hope this Helps.
Thanks

Have you done a load test on the new system to ensure there is no hardware issue? CPU fan not seated properly may also cause the system to reboot. Also check the motherboard BIOS settings and disable any power saving features or board fan rpm settings you may have turned on.
My Asus server had a similar issue and it would just crash randomly under little to light load. I had to turn of the power savings in it's BIOS and that has worked. Try it out and see.

I'm not sure what you mean by stepping. Releasing another version kind of stepping?

I haven't done too much load just yet. I'll see if I can't download a Linux VM via torrent or something. Running a large rsync via SSH didn't have any problems, though.
Good idea on the power settings. I flipped a few of those in my BIOS. I'll update this in a week or so to see if that fixed the problem.
The CPU heatsync is seated fine. My temperature in the UEFI showed 32 C immediately after reboot. Also, it appears that I don't have temperature available through pfsense on this processor, just yet. I wonder if 2.4 will bring that support around.

In Response to that, i was slightly off, but i knew what i meant.
Im unsure if this would affect yourself, but the symptoms sounds similar.

No, you may not being anything within that Post, but if anything could be using the Instruction Set, who knows what could happen.
You could try backing up your Config to the XML Via the Backup Config Option. & re-install for sanity! :)
Hope this helps.

I don't think it's that, either. The compiling issues were fixed by issuing replacements, and the newer ones are no longer affected. They stopped selling the older ones.
Regardless, I appreciate the feedback to try and resolve the issue :).
It restarted again at 4 AM on it's own. I'm wondering if I'm experiencing this. I'm going to try rolling 2.4, and see how that goes.

Looks like my upgrade didn't work. I did a clean install of 2.3.4. We'll see how that goes.

Have you tested your RAM already? Occasional reboot without any dumps and panic, mostly caused by failed hardware (ex RAM) or broken drivers (ex Realtek or USB 3.0).
https://www.memtest86.com/ do some overnight testing.
If your embedded card is realtek, stop using it, try USB 2.0 for your stick, see what happens. -

My embedded NIC is a Realtek ALC892, which is what my WAN interface is running off of. I guess I should set up some load testing on that port at some point, and see how it does.
I just got my install upgraded to 2.4.0-RC. I'll see if it continues to have issues. If it does, I'll drop down to the other port on my Intel NIC, then I'll drop the USB to my 2.0 port.

I'd run Prime95 from Linux for 24 hours (if you can)
Good luck

After several weeks of testing, I've concluded that the issue appears to have been related to the integrated Realtek ALC892. Once I stopped using it, I stopped having issues. USB 3.0 didn't seem to cause me any issues. That's what I get for assuming that "Oh hey, since I can't find that particular Realtek interface on pfsense's forums, it must be fine!"
Thanks to everyone for the help! I've learned my lesson.

The Realtek ALC892 is the Audio Codec, not the "NIC" ;)

facepalm it's a Realtek 8111GR. Bad copypasta.
