Hi, new to pfsense.

Hi, I am new to pfSense experience. My friend told me about pfsense but I have no idea what it is and how it operates? Is it a paid service? or a platform? He said something about securing the network. How pfsense can help me in that?

pfSense is a firewall. It allows you to setup rules on how your network devices may access the Internet and how the Internet may access your devices. Because it's a dedicated system just for this purpose, it has been greatly hardened against attacks and can help be a shield for your network.
pfSense is a free OS that you can install on many different types of hardward, but it does have limitations and the performance is highly sensitive to the quality of the hardware. Don't use cheap hardware, like USB or RealTek NICs.

I'm wondering how you managed to find this forum but missed their main website which answers all your questions??

It is an OpenSource x86 firewall distribution based on FreeBSD as the underlying OS.

He is telling you about his firewall, and nothing more?

A router does usually only SPI/NAT and a firewall is working with firewall rules for allow and deny
or plain passing through the entire network traffic. Or in short a router is routing between one and another or
more networks and a firewall is separating one from another or more networks. As today this border will be for
sure becoming blurred more and more.
