ZFS is production ready?
-
Hi everyone,
I noticed that on November 16, 2017 Ivor wrote that "ZFS support is currently experimental" on this wiki page:
https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Installing_pfSense#Performing_a_Full_Install_.28ISO.2C_Memstick.29
So, a new installation of 2.4.2 in ZFS on an apu2c2, without added packages is considered ready for production or not? I know the performance penalties of ZFS vs UFS, but the file system's resistance to power failures is an important added value.
Thanks

ZFS as a file system on FreeBSD is production ready but for now we recommend using the default UFS unless one experiences file system issues. We have received reports of many using ZFS on pfSense without issues.

If used on adequate hardware and properly configured ZFS wipes the floor with just about any other filesystem when it comes to read performance. It is for all intents and purposes production ready on FreeBSD/PfSense.

I would still consider it experimental on pfSense. We do not have any automated jobs setup for maintaining ZFS pools/volumes or any GUI controls for handling drive status/replacement.
For most it will work fine without any issues, but there are cases where it needs work to improve its integration into pfSense
