Data Usage Comparison
-
This question is more OpenVPN oriented than not.
Using OpenVPN connected to my home router and, on my LAN, remote desktop on a Windows PC to browse, is my data usage about the same or less than if I were browsing locally without connecting back home?
I was using my cell phone as a hot spot and thinking about data usage. On one hand, the remote PC is doing all the hard work and screens appear to be the only thing going over the line ... implying lower data usage. On the other hand, the screen has lots of data.
Anyone know for sure?

If you;re going home through the VPN and then out to the Internet, then your data to the phone would be more, due to the VPN overhead, than going straight out from the phone.

Thank you, but remote desktop on the home PC is doing the main work. The 2 PCs are just passing screens. For example, if I downloaded a giant file via remote desktop and it stayed on the remote PC, the data usage would go against the home account, not the local cell phone hot spot. For the most part, only screens are going to and from the local PC and the remote PC via OpenVPN.
I'm sure the data usage is similar, but suspect it's less if I browse on the local PC using remote desktop / OpenVPN. Has anyone actually looked into this?

You can check data usage per Firewall Rule. :-)
