Limited Options in GUI, No SSH, Box died
-
Hey y'all,
I'm fairly new to the pfSense game and I'm looking for some information as to what might have taken a turn for the worse.
I have an SG-2220 that I setup about a week ago in a lab and everything seemed to be going swimmingly.
Now, I know this is a lower power box and that I may have been asking too much of it.
I had the following running on the machine:
-
Surricata
-
ntop
-
OpenVPN
-
Three vLANs
I didn't think this was too crazy, and according to the CPU/memory usage I had a enough headroom to feel comfortable with the situation.
So, today I connected via OpenVPN with no problems and was jamming on! I then wanted to make a change to the VPN so I could pass all traffic through the VPN. So, I navigate to the box's web interface and I see no dashboard, no OpenVPN server(Even though I was connected to it via OpenVPN), no surricata, no vLAN configurations, nothing. Everything was working accordingly, but I couldn't configure anything. I was able to reboot via the GUI, but then, it never came back, the box is dead. When I say dead, I just mean nothing is going on software wise. The hardware has power across the board, I tested the board at different points for the appropriate voltages and all is good.
It is very possible that it was just a stroke of bad luck, but I have a big install where I would like to run some boxes in HA.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you,
~Mo

A bad disk can present like that. Services keep running until they need to read/write to disk and then drop out. So you can have an odd set of things still functioning.
What do it show at the serial console when you boot it now?

Stephen,
I appreciate you taking the time to reach out. I will have to check this out in the morning as I seem to have accidentally migrated the giant box of USB cables to my business' storage unit. However, in the event that the drive is bad, I wonder if Netgate has access to a replacement module that I can re-solder to the board. All-in-all, I'm quite impressed with the quality of the PCB that Netgate uses.
Thank you,
~Morgan
