Can I update FreeBSD directly using csup and rebuilding
-
I believe I would benefit from the update RE(4) driver for my onboard ethernet RTL8168D. I am wondering if I can update the pfSense FreeBSD after I have ran an install to the hard drive using the live CD? Can I invoke the FreeBSD csup to get the most current stable drivers? Thanks!

You would run the significant risk of breaking your pfSense box. What version of pfSense are you running?

I have tried 1.2.2, 1.2.3, and 2. This is for a production router for our 10 man business so I'd rather not use 2 until I here more about it's stability. All I want to do is make sure that I'm using the latest RE(4) drivers for my onboard NICs. Somewhere I read that pfSense does not include a compiler so it might not be as simple as doing a csup and a make. Excuse my ignorance.

The trouble is that the driver you're referring to is specific to the underlying version of FreeBSD. To get it you'll either need to back-port it (not necessarily simple) or update the entire of FreeBSD.
