Network layout when replacing ISP router/modem
-
I have the following ISP setup at home. I want to replace the black box with a pc running pfSense. After looking at the possibility of using 10Gbe NIC in my pfSense pc (I know it shouldn't be the only reason, but I can get 10Gbe 4 port NIC for the same price as 1Gbe 4 port NIC), I realized that the Alcatel Lucent box uses a fiber cable. Could it be possible to remove the black box and the Alcatel Lucent box, and replace it by the pfSense box with the fiber going into the 10Gbe NIC instead?

Maybe, but does that Alcatel box not also provide telephone?
And the Bell device provide cable TV services?

@stephenw10 I don't need the telephone. I'm just using internet from that box.

Then maybe, assuming you don't need the Coax connection from the Bell device also.
Is that one of those 2.5GbE connections that Bell offer? I think they actually offer a 1.5Gbps service but the link speed is 2.5G. If so I know that can be made to work but it requires some special hardware. Either a switch to act as a media converter or a NIC adapted for the purpose. There are some threads about that here.

@stephenw10 I don't have the 2.5 Gb service from bell.

Mmm, well probably have to wait for someone who's actually tried that or find a thread discussing it.
Probably is about as far as I can say there.
