Help needed - no WAN / LAN on the list of interfaces
-
Hi,
your help is needed.
I need to shape traffic. If I try to run a wizard "traffic_shaper_wizard_multi_all.xml" system gives me an error:
"This firewall does not have any WAN-type interfaces assigned that are capable of using ALTQ traffic shaping."In the menu: "Firewall --> Traffic Shaper --> By Interface" on the list of interfaces WAN and LAN interfaces are missing.
However these are the main interfaces used by the system.How I might have landed in this situation:
I was trying to configure the traffic shapers some time back(long time ago), when I was just setting my firewall up, however at that time I have interrupted the wizard as I could not answer some of the questions (sorry, knowledge was not at the lever, where it should be).
Possibly I might have deleted WAN / LAN from the list as thought they being created by the wizard - but not sure here.Question: How to repair the system and get LAN / WAN back to the list, that I could run the wizard and configure traffic shaper?
The System is on the latest version.

@AndroGen which NIC's are you using? That message is shown when altq isn't supported or in some cases has been disabled because of stability issues.

@bobbenheim the system is based on Supermicro A2SDi-4C-HLN4F, which is based on Intel Atom Processor C3558, network is based on Intel X553 Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
Shell Output - pciconf -lv | grep -A1 -B3 network ix0@pci0:6:0:0: class=0x020000 card=0x00008086 chip=0x15e48086 rev=0x11 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = 'Ethernet Connection X553 1GbE' class = network subclass = ethernet ix1@pci0:6:0:1: class=0x020000 card=0x00008086 chip=0x15e48086 rev=0x11 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = 'Ethernet Connection X553 1GbE' class = network subclass = ethernet ix2@pci0:7:0:0: class=0x020000 card=0x00008086 chip=0x15e58086 rev=0x11 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = 'Ethernet Connection X553 1GbE' class = network subclass = ethernet ix3@pci0:7:0:1: class=0x020000 card=0x00008086 chip=0x15e58086 rev=0x11 hdr=0x00 vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = 'Ethernet Connection X553 1GbE' class = network subclass = ethernet
my understanding, this NIC should be supported
Only two ports are used, "0" for WAS, and "1" for LAN interface.

@AndroGen there is stability issues with ALTQ and the IX driver used by that NIC which is the reason it has been disabled for some years now. If you need shaping your only option is to use limiters with those NIC's.

@bobbenheim, thanks for reminder.
intensively reading internet over last days my understanding is: the integration to Intel NICs has been somewhat resolved on last releases.
And coming back to question, how could I get WAL and LAN back to the list of interfaces in the menu: "Firewall --> Traffic Shaper --> By interface"
At the moment there are only interfaces related to VLANs listed there.
Is there any hint how to get them back? -
@AndroGen It seems to stop here https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/7378 and nothing has changed in Pfsense since and i have been using the IX driver for a couple of years now. Your best bet is to do shaping with limiters for now which do work perfectly fine.

@bobbenheim, thanks, understood :-(
