Atom , WRT54g interface with pFsense
-
Hi,
I'm new on this pFsense , i get to know it from TR Forums,
Currently i got a spare Atom Pc and a current running of WRT54g(v7).
I found this Router is really slow and i am not able tp upgrade the firmware to DD-WRT/Tomato, hence i plan to move this router to act as what other said
a Access Point. ..But how to i do that ?And use this Atom PC as Firewall+Router feature… but how can i do that ?? Can i run pfsense in vmware instead of formating all my data in this Atom PC??

Hi
There is no problem in what you want to do. If you want to use the WRT54G as access point, make sure to disable DHCP and other networkservices. Then just plug then LAN-side of the WRT54G to the LAN-side of PfSense. Then it will act as Access point only.
It is possible to run PfSense both in VmWare and on the barebone PC. Note that you will need either an extra NIC for the Atom-pc or have a managed switch to split WAN and LAN using VLAN's.
Good luck

My atom Pc got a PCI -wireless card and a build in network adapter will it do ?? i check no more slot available., left out 1 PCI-E slot..which is very low profile type.
So it will be like
WAN - > Modem (WAN port))-> Pfsense/Atom(Wireless AP) -> WRT54G(Wireless) ??? Will it be possible?

I think what you are trying to do is create a 'wireless bridge'. i would go with the dd-wrt firmware b/c i believe it has such a feature built in.
With that in mind directly connecting the two would be a much better option for network stability and speeds.

aeropilot is on the right track. The easiest way to turn a wireless router into a bridge is to turn off DHCP, change its LAN IP to something that doesn't conflict with pfSense, and then only plug into the LAN side, not the Internet/WAN port of the wireless router.
Why risk bricking the wireless router by reflashing with a new OS when it's that easy?

But my setting is
WAN - > ADSL <wan>->(LAN) pfsense(Wireless Nic) -> WRT54G(v5) -> (Wireless nic) Family member
1)Will it possible to connect pfsense to WRT54G through Wireless nic ??
2)Shall i use ADSL modem as PPOE(dialup itself) to establish connection ?
3)Traffic will pass direct from ADSL through a LAN cable to Pfsense (Virtual instance)

From pfSense to WRT54G is using a Wireless nic to make connect to WRT54G.
-
How to define WAN and LAN IP from pfsense if my above configuration is possible.
-
Is there any component which is redudant or missing in my configuration ??
-
I also using my pfsense (WinXP) to browse net will it possible ??</wan>
