For my WAN connection, I currently have a DSL link which is accessed via PPPoE. To add this to my HA setup, I followed this post: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/135904/configure-an-pppoe-on-an-carp-if/15, setting up a CARP VIP for the PPPoE link and referencing the CARP VIP as the Link Interface in the PPP Configuration. This setup allows the backup router to take over the WAN link when the primary is rebooted or disconnected in some way, albeit with a few seconds of packet loss while the PPP link is brought up on the backup.

I recently upgraded my backup router from 2.6.0. When I tested failover, the backup enabled the pppoe interface and brought up the link but did not assign IPv4 local and remote addresses to the interface which meant that IPv4 was not routed and no IPv4 default route was installed. Sadly, I forgot to preserve the logs before downgrading back to 2.6.0.

Any ideas on possible workarounds or alternative approaches for HA with PPPoE?

But state sync would still be enabled. And the CARP status doesn't care about the version.

It could be related that bug, though I don't see the same flood of CARP events that triggered.

Fixed: CARP event storm when leaving persistent CARP maintenance mode #12961

Perhaps this issue is being triggered from my test having a 2.6.0 peer in the HA setup. I think I need to test with both primary and secondary on 2.7.0 but I'm afraid that will have to wait until week after next.

It would be interesting to confirm if that happens with the primary in maintenance mode and you reboot the secondary when it's not upgrading. Or if you upgrade without the primary in maintenance mode as would normally be the case. Though that's obviously more difficult to test.
