First, I am not using high-availability at all; i.e. the config item for "pfsync transfers" is OFF (at least, according to the GUI). I'm not having any problems -- I'm really just trying to learn why this kind of thing occurs.

I am, however, monitoring ifconfig output periodically (via RANCID), to track changes (e.g. someone changed an interface IP via the command-line). Again, try not to focus on why I'm monitoring ifconfig output

In any case, I seem to be getting 3 different output states on the pfsync0 interface. The first is the most common. In the second variation, the "maxupd" line is missing. In the third, a mysterious "syncpeer" appears.
