Cannot uninstall OpenVPN Client from Windows 10
-
I have tried uninstalling the PFSense OpenVPN client using the normal Apps & Feature manager and also through the old Programs and Features but it fails each time. The installation is damaged and I want to completely remove and reinstall a fresh version of it, but the new installer also fails to remove the old version. How can this client be completely removed, or at least enough so the new installer overwrites the installation and puts everything back correctly?
-
@mndudek it's confusing what you write. There is no pfSense OpenVPN client for Windows.
Please provide a screenshot of what you want to uninstall.
-
The user interface is as shown, the one that is installed from the PFSense OpenVPN Client download.
-
@mndudek you want to remove the OpenVPN profile that connects to your pfSense from the OpenVPN GUI client on Windows?
Or do you want to remove the OpenVPN user from pfSense so that this user can no longer access your pfSense/Network?
-
@patient0 I want to completely remove the client app so it can be reinstalled. The insatllation is damaged, and when I run the installer, it sees that it's already installed, but the Repair and Install buttons are grayed out, the only one available is the Uninstall, but that fails because the uninstaller files are missing. (The screenshot is from another, working, machine.)

Okey, for how to uninstall a Windows app this forum is not the right place.
Personally I don't use Windows, I would ask Google.

As an aside, Windows 10 has reached 'end of support' as of 14 October 2025.

I guess as of today, there is no human being on planet earth who isn't aware of that. News papers, radio and TV took care of that (the old method, works well since WW2 - the new methods, social trash, took care of those who "can't read")
Also, no I think about it : can some one install pfSense, and at the same time not knowing what happened to Windows 10 ? I can't imagine such a person actually exists.
If Windows 10 still exists on a device, then that's because the CPU isn't 'good enough' or no TPM.
Probably x00 million PCs right now can't upgrade to "11" for these reasons.
$$ for the new device can also be a reason and import taxes won't help neither.
And India isn't ready yet to recycle these x00 million PCs and wtf, I get it. I've a PC @home that works just fine for my needs, but no TPM so no 11 for me. ... ( ok, not true, I installed 11 on it anyway and it works just fine up until the day Microsoft pulls the plug on me - and this will happen ....)Btw : more serious : there is also an extended 1 years grace period, not yet expired. If you're willing to create a MS account, it's "free".

@Gertjan Uh sir, this is a Wendy's.

What's a wendy ?

@tinfoilmatt Windows 10 has Extended Service Updates available for 3 years after the general availability has expired, which I'm running on. It's either a paid subscription or a free service depending on what type of account and relationship you have with Microsoft. There is also a micropatching service called 0Patch that will keep security up to date on Windows 10 for a minimal fee as well.

A place that serves what could be loosely referred to as 'food.'

Well then you're in luck!
-
@mndudek Since it's broken we'd all be guessing. You might have better luck in an OpenVPN forum if they have one.
There is a program Revo Uninstaller that I think I've used once long ago. Otherwise you may be able to just delete the program's folder on disk and run the installer again.

hahah - its a old joke/meme catchphrase when someone is doing something in appropriate for the setting, asking something that does not belong where they are asking, etc.
Comes from old episode of the Office. Take on the this is an Arby's meme etc..
Think of it as someone in a bank, and trying to order a burger. It's just a way of saying what your doing/asking doesn't belong here ;)
-
@mndudek First make sure the broken client is not running (kill it in Task Manager).
Then delete the OpenVPN program folder

If you also want to delete the User Profiles, they will be in your equivalent of this folder. Your user profile is most likely on drive C: unless you relocated it.
