Netgate sg-1100

Is it me or is the sg-1100 just too weak for the role? I ask as i just got mine and ouch i setup and have my dual WAN all happy and i love the software and choices but you cant run any the advertised IDS/IPS as the memory is too low.. heck even running just the pfblocker I had to just run the blocker and nothing else as even geolocation made the thing cough and sputter.. i mean im running a home Lan with dual wan not a fortune 500 but I think the router should handle the basic tasks that is advertises it can do.. as i see it there is no way to run IDS/IPS or a VPN even with blockerNG running just for ads.. its like pick one... its too wimpy and I really dislike it.. on saying that i hate the wimpy device I like the software just I cant see spending thousands on a capable router.. SOOOO question is any tips to boost this baby up? I clean reset it and like i say I had to disable the geolocation and only left the ad blocker as literally this thing was spinning to even login to the management interface and its maxed out cpu and ram just to handle routing even.. SAD

It depends, of course, on the role. For the role you're describing, let's just say it's probably not you.
I have an 1100 (actually two) and they did the job without enthusiasm and serve as shelf-spares and upgrade test units now, but the 4200 I eventually moved to actually does the job with much better throughput and responsiveness for me.
I don't even have cable or fiber that would theoretically be the driver for owning a 4200. I think actually with the slower speed services like Starlink a 4200 makes a big difference because it's higher throughput is not getting in the way of already modest speeds like I found with the 1100s.
I chose not to bother with the 2100 either due to the similar architecture.

Hi. Yes Starlink using the old pro model and Verizon 5g on a yeacomm outdoor router are my services. Dual wan load ballanced to t1 on both. I disable ipv6 on Verizon and route all my ipv6 through Starlink.
Just those 2 alone gobble up this unit.
I added pfblocker and setup geo and like I say I had to disable that geo and just go pfblocker alone.
I really wanted a router to do it all and I thought at price point of near $200 I’d be fine. Now I wish I’d just bought an Amazon barebones router box and put on ram and hdd.
Can’t see dropping 5-6 bills on the netgate to do the job I wanted this to do. Highly disappointed.

So I decided to grab one my old dell “pro desktop” I pulled from service with a 6500 i5 tossed in 1 tb NVME and 48ram I downloaded the community version and testing it.
So far it’s amazing….. compared to the netgate unit…. (I know there is not a load yet) but everything is so snappy I love that. I know it’s bound to run whatever I give it.
I now ordered myself a 4 port I350 card and I shutoff all the power management in bios and disabled sound and set the reboot on power loss. When my amazon truck arrives I’ll actually have a usable router. I do have a small pile of these desktop units for spare parts and It’s a pretty easy on power machine.

Don't forget to take in account the annual power tax.
Maybe you are extremely lucky and the tax percentage is 0,1 $/€ per KwH.
My 4100 (consumes about 25 Wh) => 22 €/$ a year.
Your 'dell' : 100 Wh ? (probably somewhat more) => 88 €/$ a year.The thing is, 0,1 $/€ is a 'before 2020 price'; so the difference will be bigger.
6500 i5 tossed in 1 tb NVME and 48ram ...
48 Gbytes of RAM ?
True, a power house.
