I keep losing access to a VIP on WAN
-
Not sure if I'm missing something or what but I have a VIP on my WAN to access a WAS-110.
Did the usual 192.168.11.2 as the VIP for the WAS-110 at 192.168.11.1.
It's available for a very short time and then it's gone. When it's gone the VIP itself doesn't show in the ARP table and isn't pingable from the pfSense interface.
I did a constant ping from my pc while troubleshooting this and once it's gone I see a few packets reply every now and then, very random and never more than 3 packets at a time.
I have an outbound NAT in place.
I tried ANY/ANY rule on the WAN (wasn't online at the time) with no difference.
I have a constant connection to the SFP if I put it on a LAN segment so the device itself isn't dropping.
Why would the VIP itself not be reachable ever? -
Where are you testing from? pfSense should always be able to ping it's own VIPs.
Do you see the VIP still present in the output of
ifconfigwhen it fails? -
@stephenw10 Testing from the LAN initially and when it fails from the pfSense ping command.
I did not try ifconfig but will next time I test. -
@stephenw10 I think I figured this out.
I moved the sfp to my IoT network along with the VIP just for testing. The VIP stayed up the whole time.
The only difference is the IoT has a static IP, the WAN is DHCP with no active IP on it. I 'assumed' since the WAN is UP (the was-110 interface keeps it active) that the VIP would stay up,
Does the interface need an actual IP for a VIP to remain active?
Shouldn't the port state dictate that? -
I would expect it to always be available. So you have it on a DHCP interface that isn't getting a lease?
I would still expect that to work. The VIP doesn't require the NIC to be linked or even logically UP to reply to pings.
-
@stephenw10 Correct. Having an issue configuring the WAS-110 and constantly losing access to it is not helping.
Also, forgot to add earlier, After the IoT test I changed the WAN to a static address and the VIP stayed up.
I do have another spare port, I'm gonna set it to DHCP and add a VIP on that just to see if it's just on the WAN that this is happening.
But right now it definitely seems like the port needs to have an address for the VIP to remain active. -
@stephenw10
Ok, been up on the new interface with it set to DHCP and no active IP for about 15 minutes now.
So it seems to be isolated to the WAN.
Any idea why? Would be a huge help if I can get the VIP to stay up without an IP on the WAN. -
Hmm, not really. The WAN should be identical to any other interface set to DHCP.
I'm failing to replicate it here so far.
Is it possible the VIP is conflicting with something on the WAN? Some other device with a duplicate IP?
-
@stephenw10 There's nothing else on the WAN, it's not connected.
-
Hmm, right. Just the NAS device holding the NIC linked?
I guess I'd check the logs when it stops responding then. There must be some process that triggers it.
-
@stephenw10
Not a NAS, a WAS-110. It's basically a ONT on an SFP.Can you explain this to me?
I did a constant ifconfig, the 172.16.0.2 is the VIP.
The other IP's are previous WAN addresses. I've been checking them and I don't see anything. -
Did some more testing this morning, it's all related to the WAS-110. Not sure why or how but for some reason the sfp knocks out the VIP.
I'll have to hope I can get it connected to end this. -
Hmm, so it is being removed from the interface. And it looks like it's removed when some other address is added. So I would expect to see some sort of log entry for that showing the new address being added and what script is running that does that. But you see nothing?

Hmm, odd. We can see it was there at Dec 15 14:06:18. By the time you logged in at 14:06:41 had it been removed?
-
@stephenw10 No, I had a constant ping going and it was there for a less than a minute still.
-
Ah OK. So was there anything in the system log after you logged in when the VIP stopped responding?
-
@stephenw10 That's the logs I posted.
-
The last thing in the system log you posted is you logging in at 14:06:41. If the VIP was still responding at that point then anything removing it would have been after that. If it logged anything at all.
