      I have a similar problem to RTL8188EU wireless usb dongle is recognized but will not configure/tether as an interface . usbconfig dump_device_desc shows

      ugen0.2: <Realtek 802.11ac NIC> at usbus0, cfg=1 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=ON (500mA)

        bLength = 0x0012
        bDescriptorType = 0x0001
        bcdUSB = 0x0210
        bDeviceClass = 0x0000  <Probed by interface class>
        bDeviceSubClass = 0x0000
        bDeviceProtocol = 0x0000
        bMaxPacketSize0 = 0x0040
        idVendor = 0x2357
        idProduct = 0x0138
        bcdDevice = 0x0210
        iManufacturer = 0x0001  <Realtek>
        iProduct = 0x0002  <802.11ac NIC>
        iSerialNumber = 0x0003  <123456>
        bNumConfigurations = 0x0001

      and I was able to successfully set cfg=1. However, interfaces/assignments shows no new adaptors, and Wireless/Add shows Parent Interface=None available.

      sysctl -n net.wlan.devices shows empty.

      I am running an official Netgate 1100 with version 23.01.

        I wouldn't expect to need to change the config index for a wifi adapter.

        What chipset is that actually using? You'll need to know that to know which driver might support it. Or if any driver does.

        It looks like it might be RTL8812BU which I don't see listed for any specific driver. For example:

          I don't see it listed as a known device here either: https://github.com/pfsense/FreeBSD-src/blob/devel-main/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs#L4833

            @stephenw10 Yeah, my assumption is that it's simply unsupported. I've given up, and will be using a stand-alone WiFi access point connected over ethernet.

              Good choice. Better in almost every way!
