Unifi just announced their traveler router that connects to home firewall and uses tether or wi-fi as an uplink.

I will be traveling a lot in 2026 even to the country that censor’s internet and I NEED to VPN back home for my VoIP to work.

@cuteliquid11 I use a gl.inet travel router - runs openwrt, you can setup up to vpn to your home network pretty easy.

I have the GL-SFT1200

I just setup to use the hotel wifi and captive portal, if the room doesn't have a wired port.. Then all my devices just auto connect to the routers wifi network.

I need something like this and then auto-VPN to my Netgate appliance via OVPN with TLS due to the country I will be in that has global DPI firewall.

OpenWRT, with Wireguard. Can use wifi as wan or lan. Works great. Turn it on, connect to network and the wireguard is up and running.

Where would you be traveling that 2.5ge makes sense?? And why would you need an hdmi port?

I don't need any graphic ports. Seems like GLINET may work for me better. Still researching my traveling requirements but I need at least OVPN support over TCP/TLS and obfuscation feature to mask it as a normal 443 traffic.

@cuteliquid11 you can always do openvpn over tcp 443. I have that as an option on my server. As to some sort of obfuscation that its not vpn traffic that a nation state couldn't figure out?? Good luck with that. Does such a thing exist? I know there are some stuff out there that say they can obfuscation openvpn connection - but to what level that prevents detection if a nation state was actually looking for it.. Not sure about that.

They're mostly being developed for use in China at the moment, as one might suspect. See Project V and Project X.

@tinfoilmatt those are not really obfuscation of openvpn traffic - those are different protocols all together.

Mine is currently in its case on its shelf, but yeah since version 4.2 of the firmware it looks to be supported. I know mine is running 4.3.25 because I for sure remember looking if there was an update before I went on my last trip back over thanksgiving.

They sell multiple different models - mine is a bit older, and only does wifi 5.. But that is all wanted/needed at the time I bought it a few years back. What I can say is its tiny, and just works.. I haven't dove into everything it can do, for example I don't use the vpn feature - just wanted something to make it easier for phones, tablet, laptop, roku stick, etc.. to not have to auth to the hotel captive portal every 24 hours ;)

Normally just streaming my home plex server, doing normal internet stuff - no need for a vpn ;) Not trying to bring world news into a nation state that filters the internet ;)

@johnpoz Not sure what looks have to do with it or why you think it's ugly but to each his own.

It has 2.5G because it's not 'strictly' a travel router. It can be used as a home router if someone wanted to. Regardless, you don't need to use the 2.5G ports.

The price is the only real reason to go with the one you posted.

The glinet antennas fold down for easy travel, etc..

Hot take: if a so-called travel router doesn't have a battery and a SIM card slot, it's not a real travel router. It's just a router.

@johnpoz Again, who cares what it looks like. And as I said, it's not a travel router. Just a really good piece of equipment.
And no, I don't think it looks bad anyway.
