6100 SFP+ Port negotiation speeds
-
Does the SFP+ port on the Netgate 6100 support 1gb speeds as well as 10gb speeds? Can I config it in pFsense to 1gb? I am using a custom sfp module to mirror the MAC address of my at&t router to bypass it. However it is a 10gb module so it should be compatible with the sfp+ port on the 6100. However my speed from the carrier is 1gb so the module is compatible but the speed is not. Is there a work around? I can’t use the SFP port because it is a 10gb module. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you kindly.

It might. Some modules will work at 1G and some cannot be set.
Officially we do not support 1G modules there because the C3K SoC doesn't include the data lines required to read/set the link rate. But users have reported that some modules can work.
So a custom module might work but it's almost impossible to say for sure without testing it.

@stephenw10 Thank you for the response. I should have asked the question before purchasing a $200 custom Pon.

@stephenw10 I’ve read that if it does work it can in some rare cases cause latency which is what I’m trying to prevent. Anyone heard of this?

Nope that's not something I'm aware of. Where are you seeing that reported?

@stephenw10 Did a search on google and found this
“ XGS-PON Driver Issues (FreeBSD): Specific XGS-PON modules, such as the widely used WAS-110, have experienced driver compatibility issues on Netgate devices (8200/6100) running FreeBSD. Users reported that while the module is detected, throughput can degrade to as low as 5% of expected speed over time, while upload speeds remain unaffected.”
I believe this was from Reddit.

Hmm, I'm not aware of that specifically. Only that the modules will generally run at their 'native speeds only because the rate cannot be set. For most dual speed modules that means 10G but some will select 1G and run fine.
The actual restriction as noted by Intel is shown here: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/netgate-6100/io-ports.html#sfp-ethernet-ports
