Askimet Sammfilter
-
Hi,
I've a topic with my pfsense box and I've try to write a Question to this forum. First in the German forum and later in a English forum. But I cant send because the Askemet spam filter is blocking my posts.
My question to the forum mod is, is it necessary to use a Content Spamfilter in a Forum who users posting much of technical content which's looking like spam?
I hoped to find help with my major topic but it's not possible to send my post :-(
Regards,
Krabat -
You just wrote a question, and posted in on the forum.
This
...Forum who users posting much of technical content which's looking like spam?
question is also the answer. If there wasn't a system to protect the forum, it would be 'obliterated' by fake posts.
So, what about the other question ?
( if needed, post a link here, and use for example pastebin.com )
-
Yup, that. Unfortunately.
Without it the forum gets flooded by spam.
-
As @stephenw10 mentions - it has happened a while back when askimet took a vacation.. We had to turn on mod approval for new user posts because we got hundreds and hundreds of use this number to call whatever etc type spam.. Woke up one morning to nothing but pages upon pages of the spam..
We couldn't keep up with it.
Even with it, I personally on some days will delete multiple spam posts. And we block quite a few bad IP ranges as well.. Which block thousands of hits an hour.
While it could be better and have better controls, without it the forum would be pretty much useless.. Even if we went back to mod approval for new user posts.. It ends up being weeding through hundreds and hundreds of spam posts per 1 actual valid post.

@krabat On a side note - once you get to 5 rep points the likely hood of your posts being marked as spam, even with walls of text is way lower.
There is a thread used somewhere asking to up to 5 reps.. I gave you one on this one so your up to 2 now ;) let me see if I can dig up that thread.
edit: here you go post in this thread and should get you enough to get to 5.

@johnpoz is ist enough to post in the thread you've send me to get an up vote?
-
It is.
-
@krabat yeah that works too ;) you just 5 - try your post now with your wall of text
-
@johnpoz It still doesn't work :-(
Well, it's a big text with much markups of config examples and console doings. If I knew whats the no go for the spam filter is, I could edit my text.
-
Ok, I've deleted a not so important example from my text and now I could post it :-)
Thanks for help!

hahah - the problem with that sort of info, if its public knowledge what the filter is looking for or how it scores, etc.. Then the spammers know how to tweak their spam to sneak through the filters..
-
@johnpoz Wouldn't it also be possible to moderate posts by new users?
That would mean significantly less stress for the user... OK, but possibly more work for the moderator ;-) -

When askimet had its issue a while back, we did go into mod approval mode and it was horrible.. I mean just pages upon pages of posts waiting to be approved where 99/100 of them where just spam.
What would be nice would be a way to whitelist a user - but it seems askimet at least with the forum software used here is pretty much a black box with almost no ability to tweak or configure.
I will agree with you it's far from perfect - but it does work for the most part, other than running into the situation you ran into.

I think the rep level requirred is actually 8 so now you should be good.

-
@stephenw10 are there different levels for things? Or is 8 the new 5?
-
Yup 8 is the new 5 for marking as ham. Not sure when that changed.
