The pfsense.org/download page references this file: "pfSense-CE-memstick-ADI-2.8.0-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz", but I can not find it anywhere. Yes I got the netgate-installer-v1.1.1 through the awkward and bizarre store mechanism, but I'd like the proper one for my hardware.

If the answer is "use the v1.1.1 installer", tell me why the download page mentions a file that is impossible to acquire. I found the older ADI-2.7.2 version, so I guess I can use that and upgrade if that's the only option.

I got this unit second hand, and the previous owner seems to have zero filled both the msata and emmc.

@jrx then download the normal installer and put plus on it. Netgate appliances are licensed for plus - even when you sell them.

@jrx You can and maybe need to install Plus on it not CE:
          https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-4860/reinstall-pfsense.html#id1

To upgrade, select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings. When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to reboot, or more depending on packages, CPU, and/or disk speed.
Only install packages for your version of pfSense.

@johnpoz I tried the v1.1.1 installer, and it says the device is not eligible for Plus. I don't think this device has been in use for a long time, before I took possession of it.

@SteveITS The docs says to get the netgate-installer-amd64.img.gz file, by which I guess it means netgate-installer-v1.1.1-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz, because that's the only choice offered by the "store".

I am still curious why the download page lists pfSense-CE-memstick-ADI-2.8.0-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz, because it implies it contains special sauce for ADI devices. And why is this file not available for download?

@jrx I have a sg-4860, it is for sure runs plus.

They stop offering directed downloads when they move to the installer. Both for + and ce..

              The installer will install either.

Netgate appliances are licensed for plus.. Not sure exactly what your seeing.. @stephenw10 would be the guy I would go to for any sort of issues with ndi and license, etc.., maybe he can chime in.

@jrx There is no separate installer for CE anymore. There never was one for 2.8. I see the name on https://www.pfsense.org/download/ but it shouldn’t exist AFAIK.

Plus eligibility is based on NDI which is calculated. Possibly someone added a network card?

I don't think you can add a network card to a 4860 ;) but maybe ssd vs the emmc.. I have one on the shelf ready to install.. But I keep putting it off.. But it is there in case my emmc fails. Since yeah the 4860 is getting pretty long in the tooth..

@johnpoz yeah ours both died. 😢

Removed one then/NIC died? TAC should be able to help regardless.

@johnpoz Should it have Plus for the life of the device? This is what the installer says:

                      netgate.png

The only thing installed on the motherboard is a 32GB SSD, I have no idea if it came with the device or not. I might add WiFi to it later, if I can find a compatible card. Will such additions change the NDI?

Yes, it's a bit old at this point, but I'm not going to ask it to do anything too fancy.

@jrx from my understanding and it would make no sense to be any different. Netgate appliances license for plus follow the device. They should always be licensed for +

That being said, if they put in a ssd vs the onboard emmc then it could of changed the ndi and could be a disconnect in licensing for it.

@stephenw10 should be able to look up that ndi and see.

if you need/want to get it up and running now you could install CE, and then get it updated to plus, etc.. once work out what is going on with its ndi. The update from ce to + should be as simple as clicking upgrade in pfsense and rebooting.

As to adding wifi - I would rethink that to be honest, freebsd - therefore pfsense not good fit for wifi to be honest.. Just get yourself an AP or use and old wifi router as AP if you need/want wifi..

Yes, the appliances got Plus for life. I bought a SG-1100 and an SG-5100 used and it works as expected (and added a SSD to the SG-5100).

Just out of curiosity: is the device labeled as an official Netgate SG-4860[1]?
                          https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/sg-4860/index.html

Adding a disk should not change the NDI, adding a NIC would change it in 3rd party devices. Not sure about the Netgate devices, I have assumed that they always stay on Plus, the installer should recognise Netgate device, not only based on the NDI. But as @johnpoz said, stephenw10 will now other open a TAC support ticket.

Is there non official sg-4860s? But yeah maybe what they got isn't an actual netgate box.

@johnpoz It has a silkscreened Netgate logo on the front, and a Netgate sticker and serial number on the bottom, so I'm pretty sure it's legit.

EDIT: Installer also says: "Detected: Netgate SG-4860"

EDIT 2: Booted the installer with the msata removed, and the NDI didn't change.

@jrx is it the desktop or 1u model - I have seen pictures of ones with smc antenna connectors on the front. Mine is the desktop model, that I put some ears on and racked..

My guess is just some sort of disconnect with with the ndi, maybe if they zero's out the emmc, or whatever they did to wipe it?

Should be easy enough to sort out after the fact.. If you need/want it up and running now to play with - I would just go forward with the CE install.. Updating it to + should be as simple as click upgrade and reboot, you wouldn't loose any config you have done via ce, etc..

I guess Netgate OEMs them from who-knows-where and maybe some clever guy thought he could fake it. There was a thread about someone who got a plain not-OEM-ed 8200 or something similar, some time ago. And tried and failed to install pfSense on it.

But it certainly sounds legit of what @jrx describes.

There were some 4860s sold with CentOS installed at a lower cost. I think they were branded RCCVE-4860. Edit: This

Also the 4860s actually predate the NDI so it's also possible that's just very old.

I have no record of that NDI so it probably falls into one of those two. @jrx send me the serial number in chat and I'll dig further.

You can install CE on those though, there was a specific memstick image: https://atxfiles.netgate.com/mirror/downloads/pfSense-CE-memstick-ADI-2.7.2-RELEASE-amd64.img.gz
                                    Upgrade to 2.8.1 from there.
