Dual WAN on 2100 using Wired and 5G connections
-
I have two internet connections, a traditional wired and a second 5G modem.
I am trying to get a backup connection using the 5G, but no matter what I try, I just cannot workout the steps to make this happen.
My main internet is a PPOE setup and is running OK, the 5G router I have put in to what I believe is passthrough mode with a gateway IP of 192.168.0.1
Configuring a Windows laptop and connecting directly to the 5G using the gateway 192.168.0.1 and a local IP of 192.168.0.5, I can surf the web fine.
Trying to convert this in to the pfSense setting, I am having no luck.
I have created WAN2, tried Static and DHCP IPs, various gateway settings and all sorts.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, the various examples I have found on the web don't give example IPs to use, so I am at a loss as what goes where.

@MartynK there is a guide here
https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/solutions/netgate-2100/opt-wan.html
Note the first blue note re switch/port setup.Your WAN2 subnet cannot be the same as any other interface.

If you are in pass-through mode then I doubt you should be using 192.168.o.anything...
That land should be in either DHCP or PPOE if that's truly what it uses.
What when address does it get?
Did you reboot the modem when you changed devices? My Verizon service requires that being in pass through mode.
-
@chpalmer from my Windows PC, if I login to the 5G router, I use the IP 192.168.0.1 to get on to the web configuration pages.
When I look at the network configuration page, it states its in "Router Mode" where its not allowing the likes of the local DHCP server to run, hence I am saying its pass-though.
I am guessing it must have a IP address locally so I can still access the config pages.
-
@SteveITS I have done this with the switch ports and when I plug in the 5G router in to the LAN1 socket I no longer lose all access, so its an advance.
The next thing now is working out the gateway as I have tried DHCP, Static etc and nothing seems to work when I put in a monitoring IP of 1.1.1.1 it states the gateway is down.

Router Mode..
is not pass through mode.
What other modes does it offer? What brand and model is this modem?
But.. from pfsense.. if you go to diagnostics / ping see if you can ping some dns such as 1.1.1.1 8.8.8.8 then some sites.. google.com ect..
But yes my Verizon modem is in pass through mode so I get a (Ill call it public for now) address 100.x.x.x and can still reach the config pages in my case 192.168.5.1. Its how they are generally designed.
My cable modem same thing. I have a public IP address but can still reach it via 192.168.100.1
192.168.0.1 should be your gateway right now..
-
@chpalmer Sorry, I had it in router mode before, its now in "IP Passthrough" mode
So what should I configure the interface as DHCP ?
Likewise the gateway, I leave the IP empty so its dynamic and put 1.1.1.1 in the monitoring IP.
But it always just states pending on the Gateways display

Have you rebooted the modem?
Does your pfSense WAN show a valid IP address?
-
@chpalmer Hi, yes I have power cycled the router
This is what I have on the Gateway list:
Name RTT RTTsd Loss Status
WAN2GW
~ (1.1.1.1) Pending Pending Pending Unknown -

Yes.. most likely DHCP.. but you seem to be avoiding several questions..

-
@chpalmer Sorry I am not trying to avoid anything.
I have set it to DHCP and it does not return any IP address, as per my last post, it just says "Pending"

But that is the gateway.. What IP address if any is the WAN actually getting or set to?
Go to /status_interfaces.php on your pfSense and look at the WAN IP there..

What make and model is this modem? Thought I asked that but I do not see that I did above..
-
@chpalmer Sorry, I did not know about that interfaces page :(
The modem model is Greenpacket Y5-210MU provided to me directly via Three UK
The results of the interfaces is as follows:

And this is the page from the modem when plugged directly in to my PC which is showing IPs:

@MartynK Thks. I am out waiting on my wife and was able to download and view the manual.. nice little router..
With most carriers you only get one ip.. that ip locks on the first device that is connected to the Ethernet port. In order to clear it you reboot the modem. I assume you are doing that..
If your WAN port for this modem is set for DHCP there should be some logs generated..
Post your DHCP logs regarding this interface.. there should be some clues there..

@MartynK mvneta0 is WAN I believe? I'd expect the VLAN/opt1 to be on LAN/mvneta1 if you followed the instructions to isolate one of those ports.
-
@SteveITS Yes, I believe I did this as per the instructions and I can now see separate VLAN IDs on the ports
-
Here are the screen shots:

-
@MartynK VLAN 4018 needs port 5t (tagged) as a member. "port 5" on the 2100 is the LAN Uplink (that connects ports 1-4). Port 1 should be untagged. See steps 18-19.
-
@SteveITS well I dont know what happened, but I now have a bricked 2100.
I am going to have to go rebuild it somehow as I cannot access it any way I have tried.
I totally knew this was going to happen, the 2100 has been so painful since I got it compared to my 4100.
Thanks for all the help.

@MartynK can you log in via console?
