I first started buying official Netgate hardware in ~2014 to 1) support them and 2) have officially approved hardware. I even at one point picked up a 2440 at their local office in Austin, TX; I'm a fan.

What I am supposed to do with this online installer now in the case of a bad configuration? What if the default online installer WAN or LAN network, because of how my modem must be configured, doesn't work by default? It seems like I have to hope the firmware logic just works.

I used to have the ability of having an offline backup of the firmware and a config for that version which I know would work. Now it feels like I am just hoping that the migration process of my old config to whatever the online only installer downloads, works.

What can I do to ensure I can always restore my system? Are there any holes in my concern that have been addressed?

You can install various versions from the installer. You can put several configs onto the installer memstick and choose from them at install time.

The config you can set in the installer should be almost everything you can set in pfSense so I wouldn't anticipate a problem.

What sort of config do you need to set for your modem?
