ERROR: cannot open /boot/lua/loader.lua: no such file or directory

I have downloaded the ISO "netgate-installer-v1.2-RELEASE-amd64.iso.gz", unzipped it and burned it to a DVD. When I boot the PC from the DVD, I get the subject line error and it stops at a command line. Why is the installer unable to load?

Hmm, what are you booting that on? How is it booting? Not UEFI I assume?

@stephenw10 it's booting from the DVD as I wrote above. It's an older PC and I don't think the BIOS is UEFI. It's a 64bit AMD CPU with 8GB of RAM, and runs Ubuntu fine (used to run Windows 10). What more do you need to know about it? Does the installer require UEFI to work? I tried installing from a USB stick and that failed - the USB stick wasn't recognised as bootable. From the screenshot above, the DVD is booting successfully to some degree, but then failing. The UI gives me a list of available commands, but I don't know why the error occurred or whether there's any way to recover from it.
PS Looking at the screenshot, perhaps the FreeBSD loader recognises the hard drive but not the DVD drive, hence the path doesn't exist? If so, it's odd that it got that far loading files from the DVD only to stop recognising it. -
Does it boot older ISO images like this for example?

Hmm, you could try the oldest ISO there: https://atxfiles.netgate.com/mirror/downloads/pfSense-CE-2.6.0-RELEASE-amd64.iso.gz
Did this system originally boot and install some much older version?

@stephenw10 thanks I'll give that one a try. No, I haven't used pfsense on it before; I was running Ubuntu.
