WAN DHCP failure loop

This is an old flaw with pfSense.
Boot the appliance and a proper WAN IP address and default gateway address are obtained from the ISP via cable modem.
If the WAN ethernet cable is then remove from the WAN port and reconnected, WAN never secures an IP address nor default gateway address. The fields are briefly populated and then the WAN interface is taken down and the pattern repeats for ever.
This behaviour is not present with the other BSD based firewall. This strongly suggest a pfSense implementation issue and not a BSD issue.
This issue has been around for many years.
I am aware that inserting a dumb switch between the firewall WAN port and the cable modem suppresses the issue but in my view is a lousy work around.
Can this finally be resolved.

@tedquade Under General Configuration on the WAN.. what is your WAN interface "Speed and Duplex" set to?

@tedquade Try "Default (no preference, typically autoselect).. There is a known issue with at least one driver.. I have the same issue on my Watchguard M400.
Make sure you reboot when you change it. Probably not necessary but its what I do and I do not have that issue anymore.

@chpalmer That did the trick. I had a lab box running in this death loop, made the change and it immediately settled into operation.
