Netgate 7100 1u hangs at booting....then shuts down and reboots

i have a Netgate 7100 1u that is about 7 years old. it has been working fine. its on 26.03.1
a week or so ago i had to reboot it for some reason, and it wont come back up. it stalls at configuring vlan interfaces, then times out and says Shutdown NOW! shutdown: pid 69635
its about 7 years old so i figured maybe hardware, but i swapped out the ssd with one that had a slightly older version 26.03 and that also had worked, and it boots fine, no issues.
so its definitely the configuration.the one thing i know is different is i installed wireguard on the later version, and thought that might be causing the issue. but wireguard doesnt use the vlan, so idk.
also during the boot process it says Executing early shell commands...WireGuard service is disabled.
any ideas? i have backups of everything, but the later ones with all the substantive changes apparently wont boot.

Hmm, well that doesn't look like a hardware issue, it's being shutdown by the OS for some reason. I would guess it's being rebooted by the ZFS bootup check because it never reaches bootup complete. I would bet a clean install of 26.03.1 will boot fine. Have you tried that?
Does it then start failing again after restoring your config?

so right now i have a ssd that boots fine but has an older config, so that should eliminate hardware unless there is some interaction with wireguard (which is the only thing i can think of that was recently installed) and the marvel switch that is causing issues.i have reinstalled 26.03.1 multiple times with a restore of the same current config, same result.
i was thinking of reinstalling it again and restoring the older config which 'should' work, but then i lose the changes i have made over the last few months.
its mostly firewall rules, dns changes, nat forwards, etc which i think can be restored piecemeal via the restore area function
is there a way to remove wireguard from the most recent config and try that so as not to lose anything else? i figured i would do a delayed start but according the the logs it isnt starting anyway....but i dont want to make a mess of the xml file that pfsense cant straighten out later (by deinstalling the package)
otherwise i will try reinstalling again, loading the older config, and try to use the restore area function to get most of it back.

Yes you can try to remove wireguard from the
<installedpackages>section of the config before restoring it.Do you have any custom shellcmds set? It looks like it's running something that never returns so prevents the RC scripts completing.

Yes if you install it then uninstall it the deinstall script should remove everything.
It should work though. There is nothing special in the 7100 that would make any difference there.

so i reinstalled with the current working/old version and i guess i will try to update to current via the backup&Resore/restoreArea piece by piece function.
just not sure what broke this in the first place.

another question; i restored the firmware and have not restored anything via the
'restore area' function because there werent that many changes and i didnt want to cause any other issues.turns out however i now have a new menu item under system entitled "Netgate Coreboot upgrade". is that something new? it gives me a 404 error if i click on it. and its different from the Netgate Firmware Upgrade package.
if it is something built in that talks to the new equipment, ok, but it shouldnt go to a 404 error.

The name of the package changed when it was expanded to include more than just Coreboot firmware. Those are just old menu entries that were not removed from the config for some reason, You could manually remove them if you really need to.

update: i loaded an older config that i knew worked, made the changes to update to just about when it failed except did not install zeek or wireguard, which at this time are both suspects.
it reboots, so whatever it was, i dont have now. and i have created a reinstall usb just in case when i install zeek/wireguard; i will be rebooting after each installation, just to see where/if it breaks.
in the meantime, did you see anything suspicious in the config? maybe its unrelated to those packages.
also i filed a bug report, which was accepted/verified, concerning restoring configs with missing packages creating issues with the menu. added that one to the rrd export not working properly, both things i found trying to hunt down this particular problem.
suggestion; might be an edge case, but - you have a reinstall all packages. it would be nice to have a deinstall all packages; it would have come in handy in this case trying to debug the system. and maybe a deinstall/clean to remove all traces of the packages from the xml

It's odd. It looks like it's the ZFS BE verification failing and triggering the reboot. But if you see the verification to manual with a very long time out it still reboots eventually and before the timeout.
Did you ever try restoring it into a UFS install?

did not try a ufs install - i have had corruption issues with ufs when the power drops (i have a large ups but sometimes things happen...)
i have run smart tests on this ssd drive 3 times, with zero errors. and two different ssd drives had the same issue, so i dont think its that
these were NEW installs using the netgate installer (v1.1.1) so im not sure why that would be an issue ONLY after the configuration is restored when rebooting. That just points to something in the configuration.
but its working now so i have no clue how it could be a zfs issue

1 slightly older config with a few less firewall rules and no wireguard/zeek packages
2 i used the 1.2 netgate installer instead of the older v1.1.1 - so its possible (unlikely) that has something to do with it. but i highly doubt itslight possibility that there was a config problem that i blindly eliminated by rolling back my recent install by a month or so - but i have manually added those changes and it reboots fine, so the content woudnt be the problem, possible corruption could be?
so maybe its safe to install wireguard/zeek now? one at a time and reboot to check?
at least now i have a 'golden' usb with all the recreated config updates, that i have boot tested; just without wireguard/zeek. so it wont take as long to fix if it wont work.
to be fair, ALL my issues started when the (old) 7100 wore out the ssd and i replaced it and restored the prior config including wireguard/zeek during install. thats when it started the stalled boot issue.

tldr; im going to try installing wireguard, then reboot to see if it hangs. maybe there was a config issue that im past now, who knows. if you dont see it, i certainly wont.chatgpt said:

it can hang or repeatedly retry interface creation..i guess installing wireguard again, then rebooting, will figure this out. i wonder if its that marvel switch that has to be programmed first causing issues during boot...

Configuring the switch doesn't take more than 10s so it's unlikely that's an issue.
I agree it's more likely some package that is either being installed or has not yet had time to install after the reboot. It's still odd where it stalls though.

just installed zeek, and although the install works, it fails on the logs- the Status/Zeek/Alerts/ Real Time Inspection log file to view is collapsed; you cant select ANY log files to view.
when i install zeek on community edition 2.8.1 it works properly. and allows you to select from a menu of logs.so thats a change that might account for something, idk.
a little searching, and it seems that is a common problem; apparently this version of zeek doesnt necessarily create the proper directory structure. i guess when you update the version of zeek, the structure is already there, so no issue. but these are new installs, so..... you get a problem.
instead of creating the directories myself and potentially causing some other issue,, im just deinstalling. will address that later or maybe it will be fixed by whoever is maintaining it.ill install wireguard next.

installed WireGuard, had an issue with some remnant configs and it wouldnt start.
so removed the configs by deinstalling/reinstalling. Then it worked.
Zeek is the only thing not installed/working at this point, and the package is apparently partially broken, so maybe thats it? or maybe it was the remnant config on wireguard.
But i now have a fully working system again. I guess i will compare the two configs and see if i can see much different that would cause this kind of stall on boot, but i dont think i know enough about this to figure it out.thanks for the help, and let me know if you figure it out.

Hmm, so you were able to restore the config and it booted correctly as long as Zeek was not included? I tested that and it still failed.
