I did a clean install of 2.7.2 on an old APU1 from Netgate (from way back when) which went fine. I then logged into the GUI and immediately updated to 2.8.1 but it won't get passed this portion of the boot:

It doesn't move beyond this point. How do I proceed? GUI also doesn't load.

        It's this: https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/releases/2-8-0.html#legacy-serial-console

It should still boot fully you just don't see it at the console. But you can fix it by adding the loader value as show here.

You can also set that one time at the loader prompt to get past it like:

        OK set hint.uart.0.at="isa"

Then edit the /boot/loader.cobf.local file once you're connected again.
