Weird gateway behavior after modem swap

Hi guys,
Not sure where to look but maybe you have encountered something similar…
So, my Spectrum modem was recently upgraded from Cisco to Spectrum EU2251 model to support higher speeds, etc.
If they interact with it from their end (ex: ISP, send activation signal) or there was some short outage at night, the Pfsense won’t come back to active connection, even though modem has all active lights are on! I’ve woken up few mornings ago to this after apparently night outage.
Basically, the gateway keeps circling and losing packets (you can see this in the screenshots), it may reach 0% loss, and 2 gateways become green, but it won’t last.
So, I need to reboot my Pfsense to get internet back! It never happened with my old Cisco modem and all outages were automatically resolved. Can it be defective modem or settings?

So the WAN_DHCP gateway there is the remote ISP gateway? And 2Cisco is the local modem address?
Are those using the default monitoring IPs?
Do you have any other gateways?
What do the logs show when it goes down?

I have a similar experience (I think) with my two WAN connections (One - Starlink, Two - ATT Wireless via Cradlepoint, I'm in the middle of nowhwere). The Cradlepoint kept throwing the connection offline for packet loss also, with the only recourse to reboot the system to regain connection temporarily.
I have found no solution either, except to go to System/Routing/Gateways/Edit and Disable Gateway Monitoring and Disable Gateway Monitoring Action only on the interface that routinely looses connection. This tells the system to assume that the connection is always available (yes, i know that is not a good assumption). I have my connections load balanced and it works fine except for not giving you the data we would like to have. Validate the traffic is flowing through both after making the mdification.
I'm not sure why the system is reporting so much packet loss (and it may be totally correct in reporting this) even when i have stripped the cradlepoint down to being in "transparent" mode.
Just a workaround to try in the interm until we both figure out what is happening. I hope it helps.

Actually it doesn't it just prevents it taking action on alerts. You would still see the monitoring data. You can set the gateway as 'always up' and that will disable the monitoring.
But you should check what's actually happening on that WAN when it gets into that state. Try running a pcap on it. You should see at least the monitoring traffic.

Yes it is.
The Cisco is a Cisco managed switch that has downstream networks, I'm using switch to handle VLAN's.
I only have those gateways.
I just checked, only WAN_DHCP using 8.8.8.8 as a monitoring IP.

Another observation. When ISP gateway is up (like now), the globe sign shifted to WAN_DHCP as oppose to my screenshot on Cisco gateway.

OK so you are seeing that default route problem. The globe indicates the current default route and that should never be via an internal gateway.
So change the IPv4 default route setting, in Sys > Routing > Gateways, from automatic to WAN_DHCP.

Thanks, do you think this was my issue when firewall got confused about which route is main?

Yes. If the WAN gateway goes down the auto setting will switch the default route to the next available gateway. In your case the internal gateway which is no good. Then it won't switch back unless that gateway goes down but it never will.

Yep, it still happening! Today, I rebooted my modem and unlike last time, the WAN gateway stayed as main all the time. But internet never reconnected until pfsence reboot.

Hmm, that log doesn't look like it covers the start of the failure? What does it cover? Were you rebooting the modem at that time or the WAN was just flapping by itself? It only covers 7 seconds.

I'd like to see what the first log entries are when it starts to see what is cause vs what's symptom.
It looks like your WAN, ix3, is losing physical link repeatedly. But is that a cause? Some low level compatibility issues can exhibit like that for example.

You have a OpenVPN client active, right ?
For the time being, disable it.
Make sure the WAN comes up correctly, and you have classic Internet access.
When that part is ok, then re enable VPN.Example : Right now, it's hard to see through the logs if the WAN connection is ok, but the VPN isn't set up correcly and becomes the gateway when powered up, so it looks like WAN doesn’t work, but it does, it's the VPN that has issues.
edit : for me, looking at the DHCP logs (worlds most simple 'connect' protocol) : you get a mask, gateway and IP, so WAN is ok, connection is ok, done.
