What kind of hardware especially CPU is needed for L3 25G speed?
-
Hi,
As the title says, what kind of CPU or hardware do I need if I want L3 25G speeds? Does pfsense good with dual socket xeon processors? More cores or less cores with higher clock speeds?Netgate 8300 page shows L3 Forwarding, iPerf3 Traffic: 36.7 Gbps but I believe this is without NAT and firewall. I dont see the IMIX speed neither on that page.
Any 8300 users?
Any other advise? -
As large as possible! I don't think I've seen anything pass that TBH. But I don't often get to play with really monster hardware.

@Patch TNSR is really not my thing.
@stephenw10 so how do other ppl deal with high speed file transfers cross-vlan? Use L3 switch if even the 8300 not good for this?
-
Yes, use a L3 switch if you want 25G would be my advice. If you don't want to go the TNSR route.
-
@stephenw10 that will be a setup that I am not familiar with and I see that managing vlans at both locations along with all the rules will be a massive PITA.
How do the vlans defined in the firewall interact with the vlans defined in the switch?
what about all the complicated firewall rules?
mdns and multicast routing between these two?
and all other stuff.... -
All of that has to be handled by ACLs in the switch in that setup. It's non-trivial!
If you truly need 25Gbps between internal subnets though that will do it.
