Enable modern virtio driver instead of lagecy and Virtio SCSI for Proxmox
-
I have some additions to https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/recipes/virtualize-proxmox-ve.html
Just add
hw.virtio.pci.transitional
to /boot/loader.conf.local to unlock the modern virtio drivers instead of the legacy ones.
This works even given the fact that Proxmox attaches the devices to the PCI bus and not PCIe. Multiqueue is also working fine then, als long as you enable it on the Nic in Proxmox. Better performance and lower (IRQ) CPU usage.
Also, an update to pfsense 2.9.0 failed with VirtIO Block disk. Had to switch to Virtio SCSI. Not sure about a new install, but maybe that needs to be revised too in the docs.

@wickeren Thanks for this. Regarding VirtIO Block, I think the docs probably need to be changed to suggest VirtIO SCSI instead, since that is the newer type- according to the official docs:

Thanks, have this on my list to try in PVE when we get to updating that VM.
Agree on the VirtIO SCSI Single vs Block.
Re: doc updates, if you're looking at the docs site on a desktop browser, or your phone turned sideways, there's a Give Feedback link in the top right that will open an issue for them to consider updates to that page. Note currently you'll need a redmine login to view that site.
