Get the following bellow when I try to upgrade from the GUI or CLI or update packages that are installed. This has been going on for a bit now.

Tried various commands to rebuild the repo but nothing so far.

      Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have a solution, but I am getting the same error when troubleshooting:

First indication to me was a recurring error that shows in alerts - your post didn't mention whether you saw this error or not.
        check_upgrade: "Updating repositories metadata" returned error code 1 @ 2026-08-31 12:44:11

This error message seems to be non-specific, and has appeared in the forum a few times in the past 2 years with different root causes. Apparently one of the causes may be a disconnected subscription database entry at Netgate. My firewall apparently has this as an issue (It is a Netgate 1541 branded appliance that is many years old), and it looks like yours may have the TAC Lite subscription issue as well.

"Your TAC Subscription expired on 2024-05-23. Please renew your TAC Subscription or purchase a pfSense+ subscription..."

The solution may be to send a direct message to Netgate with your Netgate Device ID (NDI) for them to check/update the license database.

Some of the troubleshooting included running pkg update, and I get identical output.

I went to the website, and apparently it is using a self-signed certificate - one of the other posts in the forum indicated a certificate update might be needed, but I don't know if that is the current issue.

New here, how does one send a direct message to Netgate to check this?

@taijitu Direct message/chat your NDI to @stephenw10 to avoid it being in the forum.

Also possibly related https://forum.netgate.com/topic/201172/the-2022-limited-time-pfsense-plus-promotion though I’m not clear if that applies to the home/lab license.

To upgrade, select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings. When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to reboot, or more depending on packages, CPU, and/or disk speed.
Only install packages for your version of pfSense.

It doesn't. Home and Lab Evaluation licenses are still valid and should see repo access.

Upgrades that used a TAC-Lite license from that time have now expired though as the referenced link explains.

Also Netgate devices should always be valid and have access. The 1541 referenced above likely had an expansion card fitted that meant some manual intervention was required. TAC can always resolve a situation like that.

@taijitu I opened a TAC lite support ticket - apparently my Netgate 1541 appliance somehow was linked to the 2022 limited time promotion, but should not have been, since it is a Netgate appliance. The resolution will be via the support ticket to fix whatever is incorrect in the licensing.

Edit - I've made no edits to the device - it does not have any expansion card or other modification from the base hardware.

Hmm, weird. Yeah that should never have been linked to a Plus upgrade. In fact it shouldn't have been possible to apply it! Glad it was resolved.

@stephenw10 Yes - for reference if someone searches this thread, it turned out that the device was so old (probably close to 10 years), that the serial number / Netgate device ID wasn't linked. TAC was able to link in the license check database and the issue is resolved.

                      shell command 'pfSense-repoc -DJN'
                      changed from:

                      to:
