pfSense firewall

hello, my name is bruce,
i have downloaded Oracle Virtual box and pdSense community. in the box manager, i press new, enter a name and next i have to choose an iso , but the only choice is other. i choose other and a window opens with the file pfSesnse, but when i click on the file it says empty. i am using a new windows 11laptop. can anyone offer detailed instructions how and why , how to choose an iso and why i cant choose an iso? please

@dorhoutbruce The following worked for me just now with Virtualbox 7.2.16 on Ubuntu.
- Download and unzip the installer ISO (AMD64 ISO IPMI/Virtual Machines)
- Create a new Other/Unknown 64 bit machine
** Set the ISO image to the unzipped installer
** Give it a disk of at least 6 GB
** Give it memory of at least 4 GB
** Give it a few virtual CPUs (maybe not necessary)
** Configure a network interface. NAT is the simplest networking setup. If you see complaints during installation that the installer doesn't have network access, you may have to play with the adapter type . - Start the machine and perform the installation
- After installation, change the boot order of various devices so that the virtual drive -- not the ISO -- is the first boot device. A reboot will then start pfSense.

FWIW, I installed pfSense on Virtualbox years ago to get familiar with the UI and concepts prior to building actual pfSense gateways. It was helpful.

@dorhoutbruce so just to check you’re installing it in a VM in your laptop? Does it have multiple network cards? Or what’s the end goal…?
I’ve not used Virtualbox myself but they do mention it in passing on https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/virtualization/index.html

Good for learning if nothing else. It's possible to use Virtualbox's internal networking features to create VMs and subnets on the (virtual) LAN side of the pfSense router, experiment with firewall rules, etc. It was a useful zero-risk intro to pfSense. The recipes for spinning up virtual networks in Virtualbox are on the web.

Yes it's absolutely possible to run pfSense in VBox.

Right. Over the years I've seen the occasional post expecting to install it as a program or something like that, so I was just asking. It would be more complex to use as an edge router in a laptop VM.
I didn't even see your post, it must have been just as I was saving.
