Starlink V5 with pfsense
-
This isn't really a question as it is informational. Couldn't find this anywhere on the internet.
Just got a starlink V5 and setup with pfsense.
I plugged in the starlink POE injector to the panel on the roof then the other port directly into the fresh "reset to factory defaults" pfsense wan port. Didn't even remove the starlink router from the box and never connected or powered. Turned on the pfsense and everything just worked. Didn't have to change a thing on starlink or pfsense, just worked out of the boxes together.
Hope this helps others.

Nice!

@stephenw10 ~ what WAN IP did you get? Private or CGNAT?
-
I don't have it. Just pleased to see it 'just works'.
-
@dg40 what WAN IP did you get? Private or CGNAT?
Asking for another poster.. (as well as myself..)

-
Thirded.

@rpsmith
Yes, seems to be ipv4 CGNAT.
ipv6 also issued. -
Interesting. Naturally, the near-future Universe's largest ISP runs a tight ship.
-
Can you pull a global IPv6 address on WAN and track DHCPv6 prefix delegation on downstream interface/s simultaneously?

@dg40 ~ is it in "Bypass Mode"?
-
@rpsmith "I plugged in the starlink POE injector to the panel on the roof then the other port directly into the fresh "reset to factory defaults" pfsense wan port. Didn't even remove the starlink router from the box and never connected or powered. "
Basically the Starlink dish is just a bridge only modem.
Some Starlink services come with CGNAT and some with allegedly a public IP address.. Just wondering if dg40 had the latter.

@chpalmer ~ "Didn't even remove the starlink router from the box and never connected or powered" I missed that one little minor detail :o) Thanks!
-
@chpalmer pfsense has a wan IP of 100.124.102.x but ipchicken.com shows 153.66.171.x

Booo!

@stephenw10 I need to educate myself on iov6 a bit more. I'm assuming (at the moment) that I have a public ip6 address.
-
@dg40 said in Starlink V5 with pfsense:
I'm assuming
Assume ? You're using world's most advanced Ethernet access network, and you're satisfied with a ancient, legacy IP protocol (IPv4) ?

Just click here and you see if it's modern :
Test your IPv6.

@rpsmith No. I was told bypass mode was needed with older versions of starlink and was configured in the router. In this case, I didn't use the starlink router at all. Not even for initial setup.
The only thing I needed to adjust was the dish alignment after everything was online. -
@Gertjan That first test gave me a 10/10
