      Hi,

I tried the download page but I don't see any images for offline installation and looking into the new installer, it forces you to connect online during the setup which is a problem for me as the place where I need to install pfSense don't have internet. Does anyone know where I can download the offline installation of the latest pfSense CE version?

I also seen in the changelog for pfSense CE 2.9.0 that some Celeron devices might experience kernel panic and there are recommended steps before upgrading but what about fresh installs, is there anything that also needs to be done there or the installation takes care of the issue?

      Thanks

Some of the earlier releases are available HERE and then should be able to update to latest version

He won't be able to update because according to the OP the location where he wishes to install pfSense does not have Internet connectivity. That would preclude updating, since that requires access to Netgate's servers over the web.

There are no CE download images available for any version newer than 2.7.2. Sounds like with no Internet at the final location of the new pfSense device, you will need to chart a new course of action and instead install pfSense where you have Internet connectivity and then carry or send the pre-configured box to the final location for installation.

Installing any CE version newer than 2.7.2 requires downloading the free Network Installer image. That image will then connect to Netgate's servers and pull down the specific pfSense version you select in the installer's options. That's the new mode of operation since the release of 2.8.x CE. Obviously this requires a functioning Internet connection in order to succeed.

Download and install 2.7.2, then perform an in place upgrade and hope it does not have any problems.

Personally, I have a cold spare appliance I can press into service and/or upgrade seperately so I will always have internet service.

He will have to perform the "in-place upgrade" at a location that has Internet access. He specifically stated his final destination location does not have Internet ๐Ÿ™‚. That would make the upgrade when at the final destination impossible.

An alternate path is to install 2.7.2 CE and then upgrade it at a site with Internet access and then carry the pre-configured box to the final destination.

@bmeeks @elvisimprsntr Does installing version 2.7.2 then upgrading to 2.9.0 requires to upgrade to lower versions first such as 2.8.0 before 2.9.0 or can I do the upgrade straight away from 2.7.2 to 2.9.0 without installing 2.8.0?

@elvisimprsntr How long it will be before Netgate nukes that method as well by pulling the plug on the backend? Because you know they ARE going to do that. It's just a matter of time.

Preventing upgrading from 2.7.2? Why would we do that? I'm certainly not aware of any plans to do so. We still have all the repos up for upgrading from ancient versions. ๐Ÿ˜‰

@stephenw10 To get rid of the ISOs once and for all, and push people to the new installer. That's the last loophole that needs to be closed before Netgate can control the installation process end to end. "What's that? You need to upgrade from 2.7.2? Sorry, can't get there from here. Best we can do is config.xml backup, install fresh with online installer, restore." I'd bet $100 that this will come to pass within 5 years.

As far as I know currently, you can upgrade from 2.7.2 to 2.9.0 directly. As that 2.7.2 version continues to age relative to new versions, I'm sure there will eventually come a point where a direct jump to the current version is not possible.

Mmm, pretty sure you can still upgrade from 1.2.3. Though I wouldn't recommend it!
