FYI, newegg changes their pricing on these deals. I had that kit in my cart for $299 at one time, waited about 30 minutes and then the Atom 1U box went out of stock on me. Every time after that it's been $330-$360 for that kit since then. Their pricing is annoying to say the least.

I got my X7SPA-H through SuperBiz. Do watch out buying this box set MIGHT not include the 3.5' HD bracket / 2.5' bracket. So need to double check when your ordered. I wait for the HD bracket over a month from Taiwan as it was not included.

With the same CPU and lesser ethernet interfaces (1 're' and 1 'vge') on an Intel D510MO board I am pushing 80mbps on my 100/100 fibre at home and that seems to be a bottleneck of the upstream rather than the hardware.
I think I'd be safe saying that you could run 100mbps ethernet at wirespeed.

Ok thx for the answers. The area that I live in has a shared 500/500 mbit line that isnt overused.
I'm still thinking about switching my router to a PfSense and this could be the board I chose if I build one. I'll get back with some benchmarks if/when I get it.

Do you know if the pci-e x4 allows a card other then a video card. I am interested in getting the board and put a 3ware 9650 in it.

AFAIK there is no reason to believe only a graphics card would work in that PCI-e slot. Just make sure the expansion card you're going to use is compatible with PCI-e x4 or lower.
I'm also looking into buying one of these new pineview mobo's from SuperMicro and running pfSense on it. I haven't dug into all the chipset specs yet but I would also be interested to know if a stock pfSense 1.2.3 install would run on it.

If it were me, I would wait until the "X7SPA-HF" model is available. That one has embedded IPMI (built-in KVM over IP) which is essential for a headless box stuck in a closet or datacenter.

Wondering if I should get a PicoPSU-150-XT w/102Watt adapter or if the PicoPSU-90 w/60Watt adapter is sufficient??
Other than RAM, the only other thing I will be running is an SSD .. and maybe a few extra case fans if the little bugger runs too hot.
Anyone have any solid info re: minimum / recommended power supplies ?

It also says "shared with LAN1" so I hope that means that LAN1 is used to communicate with it and than LAN1 can also be used for the pfSense LAN/WAN config, etc.

Update time.
My pair of X7SPA-H boards arrived, as did the other necessary parts. On Saturday, I built my two mini-servers and confirmed that the parts work. I used very nice Silverstone black cube cases that have lots of room for future expansion. I'll post part descriptions and pictures in several days, when I am finished with the project.
pfSense is not installed yet. My plan to boot from a 4GB thumb drive hit a snag: the pfSense embedded image wants to use serial console instead of VGA. I can't be bothered with that, as I got rid of my last RS-232 junk many years ago. It seems a few others have been through this before, so I will look at those threads in depth and figure out the best way around the problem.

The manual says it needs 2-amp from the 5v standby rail.
I got the chenbro case, a little pricey :) that has 180 watts psu.

We've just gotten in a (Supermicro Xeon) board with what's probably the same module. The documentation is pretty slim but it seems like you can put the IMPI directly onto a seperate 802.1q tagged VLAN and use the rest of the VLANs and untagged as usual.

But I'd like to know this before ordering parts.I have a Zotac ION-ITX board with Atom 330, nvidia Ion, 2 * 3.5" hdd. It runs typically around 35W, and I've never seen it hit 50W (using a brick power supply). I'm not sure you could make the X7SPA-H pull 150W if you wanted to.

I just finished building a new, completely silent, no moving parts pfSense system using this board (actually, the X7SPA-HF). The -HF includes on-board IPMI 2.0.
At idle it's using ~20 watts. Maxxing my cable connection at ~25Mbps I'm seeing around 8% CPU usage.
It's definitely a sweet little board. ICR9R, good Intel NICs, and I can verify that the PCIe x16 slot works with cards other than video. I have a PCIe x4 Intel PRO/1000 PT dual port card and pfSense sees it. I had to take it out though as I don't have a 90* PCIe adapter yet.
The IPMI is very nice. It gives full control over the board via web management (don't even need to install software on your pc). You get temps, alerts, and console access via the web interface.
It's running off a SATA -> CompactFlash adapter that mounts in one of the expansion slots. The card sticks out the back like on a Cisco router.

CPU Temp @ idle is 45C with a max of 90C.
Keep in mind this is fanless. I'm sure with some airflow it would be pretty close to ambient..

No, a 60 watt DC-DC unit came with the case.
Also, tonight I added a small 40mm fan to the one side of the case. It's only rated at 7cfm, but it's for all intents and purposes silent. It's brought the CPU and system temp down quite a bit.

Been running 2.0 on this board for about 2 weeks now…Not a bad board at all... Only issue I have is that vnstat doesn't see any traffic... Not sure its because i'm using 2.0 or if its hardware issue... Need to try 1.2.3 and see if that works...

It's definitely a sweet little board. ICR9R, good Intel NICs, and I can verify that the PCIe x16 slot works with cards other than video. I have a PCIe x4 Intel PRO/1000 PT dual port card and pfSense sees it. I had to take it out though as I don't have a 90* PCIe adapter yet.
Did you find a PCIe adapter yet?

I finally got me one of the X7SPA-HF mobo's.
I have benched it with 4GB RAM, and 64GB SSD using a standard 400Watt ATX P/S on the side.
Still hesitating on a PicoPSU for this though.
2amps on the 5V Standby Rail is shows as a peak level for all the PicoPSUs … with the Max at 1.5amps.Has anyone been able to confirm if any PicoPSU can drive the X7SPA series ?
Or does one need to consider something more robust ?I prefer small and quiet but would hate to invest the $$$ into an M350 case and PicoPSU and then find out it does not work.
Any feedback is appreciated ...

I'm running a picoPSU-150-XT Power Supply with a 80W AC-DC Power Adapter. Going strong now for about 2 weeks. I have to check what its drawing for amps but last time i checked my kill-a-watt it's running around 22watts.
btw, are you planning on running 2.0 or 1.2.3?

I just downgraded to 1.2.3 last night… A lot of little things aren't ready with 2.0 just yet...vnstat works with 1.2.3 and not 2.0 with this board.. Dont need it yet but I like knowing my bandwidth usage.
I'm really liking this board, just wish it was a PCI slot instead of a PCIe slot. Trying to find a riser card and its a pain right now. I also may change the my case to something else since I can't use the LCD with 1.2.3 and its really buggy with 2.0...
When funds allow, i may get another one because this board to me seems it would be better as a NAS, then a router.. Tons of USB slots and sata slots. BUT, having IPMI makes a plus for a router and you can't go wrong with 2 Intel nics built in

But for now, I'm going to go with the M350 + PicoPSU … as I already have the M350 VESA mount on the back of my LCD monitor.Re: the IPMI ... one accesses that via HTTP ... so how do you differeniate if you want to access the IPMI GUI versus pfSense ? IPMI does not seem to offer and way to change the TCP management port ...

As far as I can remember, the IPMI has its own IP Address that is configured in the BIOS. The LAN port will respond to either the IPMI IP Address or the pfSense configured address on the same physical port.

You are correct. You can manually assigned an IP address that is on the same subnet as the LAN interface from the BIOS. I noticed that downgrading to 1.2.3 from 2.0, the remote keyboard doesnt work. I believe its the HID driver issue that is known with FreeBSD7.2. Works fine with FreeBSD8.0,pfSense 2.0

I'm contemplating the Supermicro X7SPA-HF as well.
But I'm in great doubt whether my WAN/LAN/WLAN setup (cable 90Mbps/1Gbps/Wifi-N)
including PFsense config (snort, squid, openvpn) will serve me well with this Atom chipset.Could any of you with an Atom D510 chipset post more information about your PFSense config including CPU + memory statistics and your WAN/LAN setup?

I have a large file server with over 4TB of data that I would like to be able to access anywhere in the world down the road. Obviously bandwidth is an issue but with that aside.
I download files all the time and run a Tech help desk and connect to clients computers using Crossloop remote connection software.
I am running a phone server on my current pfsense box (I think it is freeswitch not sure or how that part works I have a friend that helps with that part).
I am going to need a vpn connection down the road and share my files with my friend.
Also need wireless on the box with a wireless card, anyone with information on that part would be greatly appreciated.Thank You
