Intel 4965AGN Wireless with pfSense
-
I am working on building a router with pfSense and Intel's new Pine Trail Atom processor. Having just realized that the motherboard I am getting has a mini PCI-E slot on it, I thought it would be nice to add in a wireless card, so I can ditch my costly separate access point. I know that pfSense does not yet support wireless-N, but I would really like to use Intel's 4965AGN wireless card in my setup. As posted elsewhere on the forums here, it looks like it may be supported by the iwn(4) driver, since it worked for the Intel Wireless 5300 card (If I read that correctly). So, my question is, if I get the 4965AGN card, is it possible that I would be able to use it as a A/B/G wireless card now, and then as time progresses and a new driver comes along, then I could use it as an A/B/G/N card?
Any thoughts you all have would be much appreciated!

The iwn(4) driver supports the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN IEEE 802.11n driver, but only on pfSense 2.0 I believe. I don't think that was in 7.
However- that card only works in station, adhoc, and monitor modes. It does not do hostap, so it cannot be an access point. You could use it for a wireless WAN.

jimp,
Is the hostap issue a limitation of the card/hardware or of the software (freeBSD)/driver?
Thanks!

I'm not sure exactly, but it may just be the driver.
I don't think any of the Intel cards can do hostap on FreeBSD though so it may really be the card, too.
