Basically, I intent to set up a firewall at my home office to maintain an IPsec VPN to my datacenter, as well as provide basic IPS features to the machines I will be using from home.

So essentially, my question boils down to "Will a dual-core 1.6 Atom with 2 GB of RAM be able to run IPsec + Snort on two interfaces?"

The gigabit cards are quite a bit better; I've never had any problems with them.

Intel cards are of higher quality, for certain, but in most cases the Realtek cards will do just fine.

While Intel NICs are certainly preferred, there's nothing wrong with Realtek Gig-E when you're talking about a home internet connection as they top out at 5-10x the typical 35-50Mbit/s for a high-end personal connection.

The Intel ones are most defiantly preferred in my opinion.
