Atheros Mini-PCI Wireless card in a Firebox x700
-
Hey there,
I recently received a Watchguard Firebox from a friend of mine with pfSense 1.2.3-RELEASE on it. I decided to see if i could get it set up as a wireless AP as well as a router. I purchased an Atheros AR5213A AR5004G Super G 108 Mbps Mini PCI Card. I put the card in the Mini-PCI slot and reboot the machine but have no more interfaces listed in the web interface.
Any Ideas?

Network interfaces need to be recognised by a driver in the operating system and pfSense needs to be told it can use them.
Issue the shell command```
ifconfig -a | grep ath
If that returns a line starting with _ath_ you have met the first requirement. From memory, to meet the second requirement it is necessary to go into the web GUI _(assign interfaces)_ menu and click on a "+" to tell pfSense you want to add an interface to pfSense's pool of interfaces.

After some fiddling ive got the AP showing up now to my wireless devices but they won't lease an IP address. I did set the interface up in the DHCP server settings so it should be.

Is your WLAN bridged with LAN? If so, you need to add firewall rules to the WLAN interface to allow DHCP traffic.
Have you checked the DHCP log for signs the DHCP request has been received? Is the DHCP requestor running Windows Vista? I have a couple of laptops at home that needed a registry patch to get DHCP working after it suddenly stopped working. (Suspect Windows Update might have done something to break DHCP but not certain.)

The firewall rule Was the key. I'd actually stumbled accross this on another forum. I believe that ive got everything setup right. Now to put the router into production tomorrow and see if it breaks everything ;)
