MagicJack on pfSense PC?
-
Hello. I'm a newbie to the pfSense world, so I hope I'm in the right forum. I have an Intel BOXD510MO /w 512 MB of RAM, and besides the builtin Realtek 8111DL, I also have an Intel Pro/1000 PCI card. It works great, but it draws around 30W of power.
I currently also have a laptop that is only drawing 10W of power, and is running nothing but WinXP and MagicJack. To justify the increase in power consuption, I was thinking I can combine the two. The Atom D510 is actually pretty powerful for just pfSense (dual core 1.66 GHz /w hypertreading), so I was wondering if it was possible to also use the same box to host MagicJack.
I don't know if there are existing packages that can do this, or if FreeSwitch (or other kind of VoIP package) can be used for this (and if so, how?), or maybe there is a dedicated MagicJack client for linux that can run in the background.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

There doesn't seem to be any simple way to get MagicJack running under FreeBSD.
If you want to go down the VOIP route then yes, FreeSwitch is what you want. It might help if however you said what you wanted to achieve.

Thanks for the response. Right now, I have a WinXP machine that's not doing anything but allow MagicJack running so we have phone service. I did this because when I had it on my Windows Server PC, every time I RDP into it, it would mess up MJ, so I finally gave up and decided to give it a PC all to itself. Also annoying when anyone uses the phone, the splash screen pops up. Even with a app that suppresses this, it still flashes on screen for a second before the app squashes it. Very annoying.
Quite simply, I just want to plug the MJ into the pfSense PC and have it work. I don't know if there is a FreeBSD SIP program that can take over the MJ Window's duties, and still use the MJ dongle hardware for audio out to the cordless phone we are currently using.
I have no idea how to use FreeSwitch. What service will work with it? And will it interface with regular phones? If it can replace MJ, I might switch my service over.
Thanks.

My understanding is that MagicJack is an entire service, you can't just go switching the software you run.
I'd suggest that going down the FreeSwitch route should only be done after you read up on FreeSwitch.

MJ is actually uses the standard SIP protocol. As long as you can get at your credentials, you can use any SIP application in place of the MJ dongle. Some have used an ATA instead.
