Performance for LAN with 150 clients
-
Hi all, new here at this forum. Every year we are having a LAN and this is now up to 150 clients connected. Last time we where about 120 clients, and our home d-link router collapsed for the preassure from the clients.
So now I am looking for a more powerful router, and stumble across pfSence. Can pfSense handle 150 simultanisly clients surfing and downloading from internet and also large heavy trafic on the LAN side, and keep a good performance. We are having 100/100 MBit line to internet.
What kind of hardware would I need to handle this load ? Could it be a miniITX motherboard with an extra networkcard or do I need a 'real' ATX mother board ? Maybe 3 netcard or more ? How much memory and one or two prcessors and what speed ?Many questions, but maybe someone has the practically experiance of such a configuration.
Greetings from Billy

Yes it can. Get a good gigaswitch on the lan side to handle the internal lan traffic.
And it can handle 1000+ users with no issues. Look at the hardware sizing guide…

Thanks
Then I will try this. There is different versions to download, 512 Mb, 1G, 2G and 4G. Is that how much memory I have in my hardware or is it something else ? -
Thanks

Is that how much memory I have in my hardware or is it something else ?That is the embedded version of pfSense for use with flash drives or CF cards. If you're using a HDD, you might want to go for the Full Install instead. This requires either a CDROM (burn the image to a CDR) or a USB thumbdrive (flash the USB installer image to a USB thumbdrive to make it bootable).

Ok, but on the download pages (ftp) there is only Ver 1.2.3 for flash drives. Cant find a 'full' version. ???
And ver 2.0 RC1 for Intel plattform I suppose the full version is called "pfSense-2.0-RC1-i386-20110226-1530.iso.gz" ?
But how do I create/burn a DVD with that ? It is not a ISO or IMG file, or can I maybe with Nero burn a gz file ? -

For the USB thumbdrive version, you will need: pfSense-memstick-2.0-RC1-i386-20110226-1530.img.gzFor pfSense 2.0 RC1, there are daily builds so the date and time (in between "pfSense-2.0-RC1-i386-" and ".iso.gz") will change according to the build date.
You will need to use 7-zip or similar compression programs to unzip the gz file. That will give you a IMG/ ISO file that you can burn as an image to CD.

Hi Got my firewall running now and I have more questions … We had problem before with Network Sessions dident was enough with the old hardware. But on pfSense is that the same as State Table Size ?
So if 10.000 is not enough I can raise it to 20.000 or more ?
And in that way get more clients to have more sessions open to the internet ?
And can I see anywhere in the Gui how many sessions is open so I know if I reach the limit ? -
Hi again
Think I found most of the answers my self. Found how many sessions I had running on the System Overwiev page…
