i have hyperthreading disabled in the bios and have tried both smp and single cpu installs

It wasn't clear if that's what you did from your last post.

Hyperthreading should be OK to enable, though in most workloads it doesn't really gain you that much.

added a system tunable: hw.acpi.handle_reboot=1
set value to: default (1)

is it now possible to enable hyperthreading in the bios or will i have to reinstall to build a proper kernel?

sysctl hw.acpi.handle_reboot=1

If that lets it reboot, set that up under System > Advanced, on the System Tunables tab.
