Different nanobsd versions
-
Just a question I couldn't find an answer to anywhere here. I am looking into building a couple of pfsense appliances to distribute to our different company locations. I am considering using 16GB ssd drives and installing the nanobsd embedded version to eliminate the issue with write limits on the ssd drive. So I have a few questions:
-
What are the differences in the 512, 1G, 2G, and 4G options for downloading pfsense nanobsd? Are these referring to the amount of storage required?
-
If my assumption above is true, then does that mean that the 4G option has all portions of pfsense installed, and the other three have varying amounts of functionality removed?
-
Is there a correlation between the version above and the amount of ram required?

All versions are the same, 512, 1G, 2G, and 4G , are the size of the storage that you need, also you can use an 1G or 2G on 4G CF card… do some search and you will find some usefull posts about this....

I did try to search and didn't come up with anything useful.
Is the functionality of the 1G version crippled compared to the 4G? Are there some features that don't work? I am just curious there is a difference in space needed if there is not difference.

No.
The nanobsd files are compressed file system images. The primary differences between (say) a 1G image and a 4G image will be the available free space after installation and that the 1G image needs a disk of at least (approx) 1GB and the 4G image needs a disk of at least (approx) 4GB.

Thanks Wallabybob. So installing the 4G version on a 16GB SSD Drive should provide plenty of room if I am only adding a few packages like openvpn, country block, etc correct?

I guess so. I'm running a full install with countryblock, bandwidthd, pfflowd and siproxd on a 1GB SSD.
