Pfsense 1.2.3 installation nightmare.
-
The setup is as follows:
NIC:
1 LAN
1 WAN
Static Internet Address for WAN
Windows XP to view the GUI
Athlon X2 (2gig DDR2 + Asus M2N-MX SE motherboard)
External DVD-RW USB to install Pfsense.
80 gig IDE hard drive MaxtorOn doing a fresh install of Pfsense 1.2.3, the WAN exists but it appears as NONE (DHCP). The uplink on both the LAN and WAN both light up. How can I fix this?
Our WAN is ppoe (requires username and password) btw.
We managed to make this installation work using the same hardware 14 or so hours ago. I got in the pfsense gui, the modem was recognized, and the 1.2.2 backup xml file was installed but after shutting pfsense down, it indicated that it was restarting. After the reboot, the WAN failed and I can't even go in the Pfsense gui. I do remember that it was an actual installation and not a running LiveCD because the disk usage was at 0-1% and not at 100%. I can't remember what I did to make it work initially.
I tried disabling as much non-essentials in the BIOS as possible but the WAN's IP address still refuses to be recognized after numerous re-installations. I can get in pfsense though using Obtain Address Automatically in Network Connections but the WAN refuses to appear.

What do you want to fix? That the DEFAULT WAN configuration get its IP address from DHCP?

You said your WAN interface uses pppoe. Then it should get its IP address from pppoe. What do you mean by the WAN's IP address still refuses to be recognized? Where are you trying to enter the WAN IP address and what is reported when you do so? (Not that it matters if you really are using pppoe on your WAN interface.)
-
-Fresh install
-Unconnected to a cableLAN = 192.168.1.1
WAN = NONE (DHCP)-Fresh install
-Connected to a cable (Link is Up)LAN = 192.168.1.1
WAN = NONE (DHCP)Why can't the WAN be recognized? The DSL Modem is connected and is working flawlessly when connected on a single computer.

Have you assigned those interfaces correctly? so you really know which interface is wan and lan?

You need to configure your WAN link as pppoe. I no longer have a pfSense 1.2.3 system so I'm unable to tell you how to do that by using my system as a reference. Have you checked the pfSense documentation pages at http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Main_Page

All you need to do is edit the WAN interface, select PPPoE instead of DHCP, and then scroll down a bit to enter the username & password.

I can't get in the PFsense GUI let alone change the WAN to PPPoE.
LAN shows up as 192.168.1.1
WAN shows up as 0.0.0.0Both have uplinks (light).
On obtain the IP Address Automatically, the PC's Network Connection indicates "Acquiring Network Address" or something like that then a yellow warning triangle pops up.
When I do the "Use the Following IP Address using the Default Gateway, the network connection becomes normal but I still can't log-in to the PFSense GUI.
What could I be doing wrong?
-
Temporarily change your Windows PC to have a fixed IP address in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet (e.g. 192.168.1.2).
Then in your browser location bar type 192.168.1.1
At the login prompt type admin and pfsense.
Change the admin password.
Fix the WAN configuration as described earlier.
You should explore the pfSense documentation at http://doc.pfsense.org especially the beginner's installation guide, second half of step 2 and beyond.

I would also be curious as to whether or not your ISP's modem is bonded to the MAC of the PC you said it works on. You may need to power cycle the modem or get the ISP to release it if that's the case.

The yellow triangle can appear to indicate that there is no internet access even when the local connection is working correctly. Check what the statos og the connection is, you may find that pfSense has correctly assigned the ip address.
When you assign the address manually the connection always shows up as OK as long the cable actually connected. This does not indicate that the address or gateway are set correctly.Steve
