<![CDATA[Huawei E1691 Data Stick - Anyone had luck with it?]]>Hi guys,

I just plugged in a Huawei E1691 and I don't see any interface possible to add.

It's used with WindMobile in Canada.

This is what I see onconsole when connecting the dongle:

da0 is the micro SD card slot.

I will attach it to a Windows system and get the IDs and report back.

The virtual CD-ROM is I think related tot he storage unit of the stick. I think it takes a micro-SD card in case storage is needed. There is not any other device like connected to this Alix board and it's a standard - non-tampered - install of pfSense.

It's interesting that the log shows u3g connecting to it. It isn't a device that's in the u3g source code, even the most recent.
The first thing I would try is ejecting the virtual CDROM drive. Unfortunately the scsieject command isn't in pfSense so you would have to copy iy across from FreeBSD 8.1. This is an easy test but most other Huawei devices require their special code to be sent. In which case you would have to edit the u3g source to include the USB device and vendor IDs from your stick and recompile.

You haven't given the IDs which would pin down exactly what device you have. Use usbconfig.

Perhaps both are true. In the WiFi world quite a number of suppliers routinely use the same model name to describe devices with different chipsets.

By using the absolute least possible hardware and doing all the hard work in software they make more profit. Non-Windows users (and now Mac users) are just not worth bothering with!  >:( >:( >:(

Of course OSX is BSD based so maybe a port could happen?

To Linux users: The Huawei E1691 data stick works perfectly on Ubuntu 10.10. It's recognized right after I plug it in, without any driver installation.

The 1691 is a lite version and only has software for Windows and Mac. After a few days of fighting with it, doing much more homework, and even calling tech support, I finally learned about the UMG1691 – it is a total software solution and will never work under Linux

Oh good a USB Winmodem.
If that's true then it's extremely unlikely to work, ever!  :(
