Can Ping ok, but no browse
-
Hello Pfsense community,
Been struggling with the integration between PfSense and SMC Business Class modem (Comcast).
I have visibility to the modem from PFSense. Topology is simple and is as follows:
LAN ⇐⇒ PFSense ⇐⇒ SMC ⇐⇒ Internet
These are the knowns:
(1) If I uplink with computer directly to one of the ports on the SMC modem (to test), I can see the internet and browse.
(2) If I uplink directly to the LAN NIC on the PFSense box, I can ping out successfully from the PFSense Diagnostic through the SMC modem and get a proper feedback from the targeted site (full domain name or ip address). I have visibility to the internet, however my brower(s) do not work. Ping works, but no browser.
Any thoughts on what to do? I have a simple set up with no fancy configurations. I have no filters, no bridging, no NAT

1.) Check firewall rules to allow all traffic on LAn interface
2.) Enable DNS Forwarder in pfsense
3.) Configure DHCP Server for LAN interface to send DNS or add it manualle on hosts on LAN. Choose the pfsense LAN interface as DNS server for the hosts. -
SMC Business Class modem (Comcast).
Is your gateway modem bridged? Have you tried rebooting it before connecting your pfSense box?

Care to elaborate on my brower(s) do not work? They crash? They appear busy but don't display anything? They report "unrecognised hostname"? …
Do you get different results if you give a hostname in the location box or give an IP address in the location box? If so, how are they different?

Thanks to all for your help. The solution was found by:
-Enable DNS Forwarder in pfsense
It works great now.
