Disaster recover plan
-
Considering that Captive Portal, SQUID, NTOP, local FreeRadius, NMAP, and all other packages are installed, is there a guide to create a disaster recover plan ?
I mean, what should be saved so that the box can be re-installed from zero and then have everything reconfigured at a glance .
or
What should be saved so that a standy-by box (not CARP) can [ receive | get ] the configurations automagically, so that just a change of cable would transform the standy-by in production ?
Will users password be saved and restored ? Will NTOP graphs and password also ? Would it be almost transparent for admin and /or users except for downtime required ?
Will the backup procedure be running on the "new" box, so that when returning to the "production" server, any changes during the "contingency box" would also be reflected on the "production box" also after the next required intervention and downtime ?

Backup the configuration. All settings are in this file.

Pardon me for jumping in here…
If I have a vanilla install from the same version I was running before what happens if I restore the config containing package infos?
Will they be installed automagically, does the system get confused or doesn't it care until I reinstall all packages previously applied? The clean order would be:
-
install from scratch,
-
install packages,
-
restore config
Right?
Cheers

Install pfSense (recent snapshot)
Restore configuration
On bootup pfSense will detect missing packages and automatically install the needed bits. It's really that simple.

You keep me impressed!
You guys are doing a fantastic job! Thanks again!

Btw, if you don't want this behaviour you can backup your config.xml without the package information (there's a checkbox when you donwload the config.xml) ;)

:) :o :)
I'm really astonished by the quality of the your project, it's stability, potential, quality and "simplicity" (related how easy to use it is, not related to developing / maintaining ) .
As I could read on the forum, almost each and everything was foresaw, analyzed and treated.
Great work, congratulations.
Thanks a lot.
